Assistant Director Instructional Design

Johns Hopkins Carey Business School is seeking an experienced Instructional Designer with strong managerial skills to fill the role of Assistant Director Instructional Design. The Assistant Director will provide instructional design to leadership and support the expansion and operation of our online and onsite/hybrid programs at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. This position will provide instructional design, development, and evaluation services to faculty with technology-enhanced instruction that will promote learning technologies for both onsite and online courses. The candidate will assess the instructional design and development learning opportunities/needs and provide individual training and coaching for faculty to meet those needs. The candidate will contribute to faculty development workshops and support residencies that promote teaching, learning, and assessment in areas related to learning strategies, instructional technology, and student learning outcomes. The Assistant Director for Instructional Design is an integral member of the Teaching & Learning@Carey (T&L) team and collaborates with T&L leadership in implementing Carey’s online course policies and operating practices to ensure success of Carey’s programs.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Course Coordination (40%)

  • Lead the continued improvement and maintenance of the online programs through course design, course and program evaluations, and course revisions.
  • Support the offering of ADA, Section 508, and WCAG 2.0 compliant content for online programs (i.e., ensure all videos, content, and graphics are properly developed with ADA and Section 508 guidelines).
  • Support the online development vendor operations with Carey departments and faculty.
  • Implement quality assurance processes to ensure that the online courses are functional and error-free.
  • Coordinate access and deployment activities with various Carey departments to ensure that the program is properly set up in Canvas, Student Information System, and other related systems.
  • Collaborate with T&L’s Multimedia team on media implementation, synchronous online sessions, program residencies, faculty filming, and other events.
  • Lead the maintenance and continuous improvement of an orientation program for newly enrolled online students.
  • Collect, analyze, and report data on the program progress, challenges, and areas for improvement.
  • Collaborates with team members and faculty to develop technology-enriched course materials using new and emerging instructional technologies, digital media, web-based technologies, etc.
  • Provides technical support for online course delivery in both synchronous and asynchronous learning environments.
  • Promote best practice guidelines and quality assurance measures for online pedagogy, including accessibility design standards and quality assurance framework.


Staff Performance Management (15%)

  • Lead a team of full-time Instructional Designers to achieve T&L goals, including overseeing day-to-day workflow, prioritizing projects timeline, and conducting team member performance evaluations
  • Train, coach, and mentor supporting Instructional Designers to achieve established performance goals and objectives.
  • Schedule staff to ensure faculty support for the School’s instructional design needs.


Faculty Training and Development (10%)

  • Support the instructional design/development and technology processes of the Carey online and onsite programs that will promote learning technologies.
  • Support and implement solutions for instructional design and development processes (i.e., determine faculty learning opportunities and needs, software evaluation and recommendations).
  • Contribute to faculty development workshops that will promote teaching, learning, and assessment in areas related to learning strategies, instructional technology, and student learning outcomes.
  • Conduct individual training and coaching for faculty to meet instructional design and development learning opportunities and needs.
  • Designs, develops, and delivers training workshops to introduce faculty, Teaching Assistants, and students to the emerging instructional technologies and their effective application in teaching and learning.
  • Develop training programs for new faculty and Teaching Assistants.


Instructional Design and Development (15%)

  • Lead the writing, copy editing, and scripting for online courses, and related initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the online course development vendor in the design, development, and delivery of online courses.
  • Provide instructional design, development, and evaluation services for already developed Carey online courses and programs in collaboration with faculty.
  • Provide instructional design, development, and evaluation services for onsite courses in collaboration with faculty.
  • F. Specialized Assignments Management 15%.
  • Provide leadership and support to School initiatives such as Accessibility coordination, Assessment planning, Quality Assurance (QA) management, Assurance of Learning, and non-credit program coordination.
  • Oversee the assessment and redesign of existing programs.
  • Establish collaborations with various programs, units, and departments to identify collaboration opportunities and support structure.
  • Provide support for curriculum mapping, design, and development by integrating innovative pedagogies, and best practices that result in high-quality teaching and learning experiences.
  • Provide expertise in systematic assessment tool design & development for curricular and co-curricular programs.


Specialized Assignments Management (15%)

  • Provide leadership and support to School initiatives such as Accessibility coordination, Assessment planning, Quality Assurance (QA) management, Assurance of Learning, and non-credit program coordination.


Other tasks as assigned (5%)


Note - This position requires occasional evenings and weekends in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. to accommodate program needs.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Experience in the practical application of instructional design theory.
  • Skilled in all instructional design processes: needs assessments, design, development, teaching, implementation, and evaluation/assessment, including developing rubrics.
  • Expertise in web conferencing tools (e.g., Zoom) and Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas).
  • Knowledge of social media tools and their application in teaching, learning, and research.
  • Skilled in content editing and scripting for video production.
  • Knowledge of multimedia authoring software and project management tools.
  • Knowledge of lecture and screen capture tools such as Camtasia, Adobe Presenter, Adobe Captivate, Kaltura, Panopto, etc.
  • Ability to research new technology tools beneficial to promoting engaged learning and teaching.
  • Ability to collect data, analyze data, create reports, and prepare written communication with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a varied constituency including faculty, staff, students, and industry representatives.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and highly organized.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in the use of MS Office Suite software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for corresponding, analysis, information storage, and presentation.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience developing courses in a Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas), and utilizing web design tools (e.g., Photoshop, DreamWeaver, HTML, CSS), digital video, audio editing software, and multimedia authoring software (e.g., Adobe Premiere, After Effects, and/or Final Cut Pro).
  • Experience developing asynchronous training sites & materials.
  • Quality Matters (QM) or Online Learning Consortium (OLC) certification is preferred.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduate Degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, or related field.
  • Five years related experience, including supervisory experience required.
  • Additional experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Four or more years of progressively responsible experience coordinating higher education (and/or corporate) technology-based projects and programs.
  • One to Two years of supervisory and management experience, or experience functioning as a team lead strongly preferred.
