Assistant Director Student Engagement

The Carey Office of Student Affairs is seeking an Assistant Director of Student Engagement  (Student Services Administrator) who will be responsible for the co-development, implementation and support of all the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) programs and activities at the Carey Business School. The primary function of this position will be to lead student engagement of professional graduate students, to include student organizations and informational programming. They will work directly with faculty, students, staff and outside stakeholders to identify and implement solutions. They will be joining a student-centered, high-functioning, high-paced, and collaborative team, and will be expected to contribute to its values of respect, integrity, dependability, engagement, personal motivation, entrepreneurship, and exceptional work ethic. This position is key to student development and success.


The incumbent will report to the Associate Director of Student Life, and interact with a variety of people throughout the year including parents, students, prospective students, staff, faculty and instructors, peers at other Johns Hopkins University (JHU) schools, the student assistance program, vendors and community members. This position requires the ability to practice independent thinking and creative approach to addressing student needs, coaching, engagement, and retention.


The successful candidate must be able to collaborate, communicate effectively, prioritize multiple tasks, take a proactive approach to work on assignments, and take initiative in the anticipation of future needs of the Student Affairs team at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. OSA encompasses a wide spectrum of activities: Student Disability Services (SDS), Student- related Policies and Procedures, Academic Ethics Policy (AEP), Student Conduct Code, Student Organizations, student academic and co-curricular support programming and resources. This wide range of responsibilities demands great flexibility, collaboration, and excellent work ethic. The incumbent is directly responsible for the following services: supervision of Student Organization Leaders, coordination of all engagement activities related to Student Organizations, coordination of a robust calendar of more than 50 student-facing events per academic year with a detailed focus on program design, scheduling, and events support.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Student Organizations Programming Support (75%)

  • Support program design, delivery and evaluation for Student Organizations. Program focus areas includes community impact events, leadership development, conferences, competitions and other key events.
  • Serve as a coordinating adviser for all Student Organizations, Carey Fellows, and Carey Ambassadors as they develop and implement activities that support the school’s strategic vision
  • Provide content and maintain communication channels for all Student Organizations; including online event platform, social media and Carey web page
  • Manage financial activity for all Student Organizations; including purchasing, contracts, reimbursements, and budget tracking
  • Develop and deliver appropriate educational resources for Student Organization leaders
  • Assist Student Organizations with support and knowledge regarding University and School policies and procedures
  • Provide operational support and assist with managing logistics for student programs and events hosted by Student Organizations
  • Coordinate with key campus partners in other units of the university regarding student engagement, inclusion, and success initiatives
  • Manage student mass communication including creation of Student Newsletter


Student Life Programming and Services (15%)

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive design and logistics plan for all student programming.
  • Co-create and implement activities and events for Week of Finals (two in the Fall, two in the Spring and one in the Summer), and the Cultural Connections Program
  • Propose and execute new programs based on the student satisfaction survey and other student feedback.
  • Conduct research and identify trends and programs that will support school-wide student retention and engagement.
  • Serve on school-wide committees to support the mission of the school (such as the graduation and orientation work groups).
  • Serve as a back-up to the Administrative Supervisor in responding to all inquiries about student services (including email, mail, phone, walk-ins, etc.).
  • Support the planning and execution of OSA activities and school/university-wide activities such as: orientations, student engagement programming, university-wide student initiatives such as the Health and Wellness initiatives, etc.
  • Recruit, hire, train and manage Graduate Assistants


Other duties as assigned (10%)


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Three years of student affairs, administrative experience in higher education, (specifically a business school, is highly preferred), or other related experience required.
  • Extensive education and/or experience will receive additional consideration for compensation outside of the posted range.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

  • Master’s in Business, Student Affairs or similar degree preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of progressively responsible student services experience in an academic or student programming environment.

  • Travel between Harbor East and Washington, D.C. locations is required (occasionally for off-site activities). Reliable transportation expected.
  • Flexible hours are required, including weekends and evening and able to work occasional overtime throughout the academic year.


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to carry 25lbs.


Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Oversees daily work of 1-2 graduate student worker(s) throughout the year.


JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Starting Salary Range: $45,650 - $62,850 annually (commensurate with experience)
Employee group: Full Time 
Schedule: ​​​​​​​Monday-Friday 8:30-5 with occasional evenings and weekends as needed to support students and the department

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
