Assistant Director for Student Development, Hop-In


General Summary:
The Hop-In Program supports of the success of first-generation students, low-income students, and/or students with disabilities by providing a year round high-touch, intentional, and holistic advising model consisting of a summer program, leadership development, mentoring, and academic support. The Assistant Director will be responsible for the coordination of student leadership programs within Hop-In such as the Hop-In Peer Leader & Mentor Program, Hop-In Student Advisory Board, and the Hop-In Buddy Program. This position will also be responsible for compiling and managing data pertinent to Hop-In assessment activities and programmatic initiatives as well as providing advising and coaching to students within the Hop-In Program. 

The Assistant Director of Hop-In must demonstrate knowledge of program development and implementation, a record of effective collaboration with faculty and college administration, student leadership advising and coaching, student development theory, and an appreciation for the student-centered mission of the Center for Student Success. This position occasionally supports collaborative programming between Hop-In, Johns Hopkins Underrepresented in Medicine Program (JUMP), and the First Generation and Limited Income (FLI) Initiatives. The work schedule will be developed around program demands which include evenings and weekends. This is a full time positon.


Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for providing individual and holistic academic coaching to Hop-In participants from matriculation to graduation utilizing the Hop-In curriculum (n=50).
  • Outreach to and meet regularly with students to discuss needs, monitor academic progress, and assist with the resolution of academic and personal challenges. 
  • Monitor Hop-In advisees’ academic performance via the University early alert system and maintain on-going contact with academic advisors and faculty.
  • Motivate and guide Hop-In student leaders in constructive and productive activities consistent with their objectives and college goals.


  • Assess Hop-In students’ needs for services and make referrals to appropriate campus resources or University staff (e.g. case managers, psychologists, academic advisors, etc.) to support students facing personal or academic challenges.
  • Advocate for and support the participation of Hop-In students in campus wide student initiatives and/or leadership positions.


  • Track the success, program participation, and high impact practices of advisees, mentors, student advisory board members, and buddies as well as generate semester reports. 
  • Manage spreadsheets for Hop-In assessment activities and assist with report writing. 
  • Evaluate events, participation satisfaction, workshops, and related initiatives in achieving goals and learning outcomes with the Summer Program. These efforts including administering surveys as well as evaluating and analyzing relevant data collected over the summer. 


  • Responsible for coordinating and providing advisory support to the Hop-In Student Leadership Programs (Student Advisory Board, Mentor Program, and the Buddy Program).
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate leadership seminars, training, and workshops for Hop-In student leaders including student advisory board members, peer leaders, and peer mentors. 
  • Assist with development and management of new initiatives targeting and supporting first generation, limited/low-income populations such as faculty networking dinners and events.
  • Coordinate the academic and staffing components of the 5 week summer program including staff training and recruitment, academic partnerships, academic workshops, and the mentor collective.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested by Supervisor.



  • Master’s degree in multicultural education, higher education administration, intercultural communication, student affairs administration, counseling, or other related field required.


Required Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Three years of related experience required. Experience should include: 

  • Demonstrated success working with high achieving, high-need college students.
  • Relevant experience in designing, coordinating, and evaluating educational, social, or cultural activities and/or leadership programs.
  • Relevant experience working in an environment with competing priorities that require the coordination and management of students, resources, and timelines
  • Proven ability to work across organizational boundaries as an effective member of a team, and a demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a wide range of campus and community constituencies


Preferred Qualification, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A demonstrated understanding of best practices in providing academic support to high-achieving first generation, limited/low-income populations at a highly selective institution preferred.
  • A demonstrated understanding of the mission of a complex, decentralized research university.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively and efficiently perform duties and responsibilities with attention to detail and support for organizational policies, as well as the ability to anticipate demands/pressures of assignments and adjust accordingly.
  • Professional maturity that will foster a positive work environment as well as a professional mentoring and advising relationship with students.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and work as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with computers and basic software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
  • Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of college students.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
