General Description: 

 

Within the Office of Alumni Relations, the Student & Young Alumni Program is the primary source of engagement opportunities and relationship building for current undergraduates and Homewood young alumni (0-10 years post-graduation). The Assistant Director of Student and Young Alumni Programs will focus primarily on programs and initiatives meant to engage and steward young alumni, while creating connections between young alumni and current undergraduate students.  Johns Hopkins University has over 10,000 undergraduate alumni that have graduated within the past ten years.  The position represents the university at various functions to a constituency which includes: alumni, parents, students, prospective students, and friends of the university.  This position will work in close partnership with annual giving, divisional development offices, admissions, career center, student life, athletics, parent programs, and others.

Under guidance from the Office of Alumni Relations leadership, the Assistant Director will develop and execute strategies to maximize engagement of young alumni (undergraduates 0-10 years post-graduation).  The Assistant Director will develop, deploy, and promote programs that support the strategic plan of Development and Alumni Relations.  This includes both creating new initiatives and evaluating existing ones to determine opportunities to strengthen or rethink programs.  The engagement of current students and young alumni is critical to the success of Development and Alumni Relations by developing the pipeline of future donors and key alumni leaders.

In order to meet specific goals of the Student & Young Alumni Programs team and Development and Alumni Relations, this position will be charged with the following responsibilities:

  • Serve as the staff liaison to 3 of our Young Alumni Committees (Washington DC, Philadelphia, and Boston); assist with volunteer recruitment and training, and event planning and promotion
  • Assist Young Alumni Committee leaders in creating timelines and budgets for events and ensure all details are carried out in a timely and efficient manner.  Assist volunteers in negotiations and contracts with vendors.  Maintain accurate budget information for all assigned chapters.
  • Serve as the staff liaison for several all-alumni regional communities (e.g. Raleigh/Durham, Pittsburgh); areas with large young alumni populations.  Assist with volunteer recruitment, training, event planning and promotion.
  • Cultivate young alumni volunteers and programs in graduate school communities with large JHU young alumni populations (e.g. New Haven, Princeton, Ann Arbor, etc.)
  • Co-lead the planning of the Seniors and Young Alumni Leadership Symposium (fall) and the Juniors and Young Alumni Seminar (spring); oversee the agenda, recruit young alumni volunteers and student participants
  • Serve as the co-staff liaison to the Alumni Council’s Student Engagement Committee; assisting the committee with their initiatives (e.g. Ring Program, Journal Article Club Welcome/Graduation gifts)
  • Serve as the Co-Advisor to the Alumni Student Ambassadors, a student organization within the Office of Alumni Relations.  Specifically, oversee Internal Affairs (General Body Meetings, Onboarding, Communication), New Member Recruitment, and Student Programs (Industry Dinners); work closely with ASA President.
  • Oversee the Young Alumni Book Club; working directly with the managing company and promoting the readings to our young alumni population
  • Engage in data collection efforts for graduating seniors and young alumni; initiate campaigns to update contact information and student organization affiliations
  • Co-manage the young alumni group on our GoHopOnline digital platform; consistently update content and reply to messages.
  • Serve as our team’s liaison to several Homewood campus partners (e.g. Undergraduate Admissions, Parent Programs)
  • Serve as the first point of contact for individual students and student organizations wishing to connect and network with alumni, including promotion of GoHopOnline to the student body.
  • Maintain regular communication and cultivate productive relationships with a wide range of alumni—locally and nationally. Conduct visits and calls when appropriate to develop a base of volunteer support and increase participation in alumni activities.
  • Communicate frequently with development staff for the identification of volunteers and potential donors. Assist with stewardship of existing donors, when appropriate.
  • Consistently manage multiple events and priorities in a calm and professional manner.
  • Oversee set-up of on-site vendors and catering staff as needed. Staff events and manage registration tables for greeting, guest check-in, distributing name tags and materials as needed.  Trouble-shoot during events to ensure that they run according to schedule.
  • Events may be located on campus, throughout Baltimore or Washington D.C., or out of state requiring travel and overnight accommodations. Travel commitment varies throughout the year.
  • Collaborate on marketing and collateral pieces to include programs and invitations, as well as the Alumni Relations events website and email communications strategy per event.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the Development and Alumni Relations database system known as ALADIN; specifically running queries and reports.
  • Develop a proficient understanding of the Relationship Management module and add meaningful data to alumni profiles.
  • Collaborate with Homewood campus partners and the nine divisions to create and maintain pathways for young alumni participation that advance the goals of the university.
  • Staff regional chapter events, Alumni Council Weekend, Homecoming/Reunion and Young Alumni Weekend activities as necessary.
  • Execute other special projects and tasks as assigned by supervisor.
  • This position will report to the Director of Student, Young Alumni, and Regional Programs.

 

Qualifications: 

Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred. Minimum two years related experience required, preferably in a college or university alumni relations, development, or student affairs setting. Experience in a non-profit or volunteer management setting may substitute for higher education experience.  Excellent interpersonal, organizational, oral, and written communication skills. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred. Two year experience in a college or university alumni relations, development, or student affairs setting. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, oral, and written communication skills. 

Willingness to travel, work evenings/weekends to support programs and events is required.  Driver’s license required.
