Assistant Director of Development, Basic Sciences


Summary of Responsibilities


The Assistant Director will lead the solicitation of high-end annual gifts ($500 to $25,000) in support of the Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences, Institute for Cell Engineering, and Department of Genetic Medicine from alumni, current and former faculty, and friends. Working with senior development staff members, faculty and administrators, the Assistant Director will identify, strategize, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of prospects, completing discovery visits, solicitation calls, and stewardship touches. The Assistant Director will play a lead role in departmental donor stewardship efforts and donor events, including creating endowment reports and ensuring that annual visits are made by Basic Sciences development officers, faculty members, or personally when appropriate.



Specific Responsibilities


  • Develops an understanding and keen ability to accurately verbalize the mission of the Institute for Basic Biomedical Sciences, Institute for Cell Engineering, and Department of Genetic Medicine. Articulates the need for support for unrestricted funds and priority needs in these areas.


  • Works closely with the Director of Development and Senior Associate Director of Development to identify and qualify new prospects and build a pipeline of new prospects and past donors beginning at the $500 + gift level.


  • Manages a personal portfolio of 75-100 high-end annual giving and stewardship prospects capable of giving $500 to $25,000, engaging them as appropriate, whether via discovery, cultivation, solicitation or stewardship visits.


  • Completes 50 or more meaningful prospect and donor visits per year. Performance targets also include benchmarks for funds raised, proposals developed and submitted, and substantive actions, among others.


  • Serves as primary development liaison to 2-4 IBBS, ICE, or DGM faculty members. Holds recurring meetings to encourage faculty participation in development activities and coordinates faculty participation in prospect solicitations and stewardship. Keeps development team current on faculty research initiatives and funding priorities.


  • Works with the development team to design and execute unique and meaningful annual stewardship plans, including determining the timing and types of stewardship required for each constituency.  Ensures successful completion of all assigned mandatory stewardship plans for $100,000+ cumulative level donors each fiscal year.


  • Writes annual endowment reports and stewardship letters on behalf of Basic Sciences gift officers, Institute and department directors and/or other faculty members. 


  • Represents IBBS, DGM, and ICE on the Donor Relations Liaison Group and other institutional groups as appropriate. 


  • Plans, implements and staffs stewardship and cultivation events, such as professorship dedications, cultivation receptions, alumni gatherings, and other events. Oversees mailings; selects suitable event space both on and off campus; and interfaces with vendors including caterers, designers, printers, photographers, and florists.


  • Manages annual giving program for IBBS, DGM, and ICE, acting as the liaison between the Office of Medical Annual Giving (OMAG) and the Basic Sciences team. Coordinates the production process of direct mail and phonathon with the Office of Medical Annual Giving (OMAG). Coordinates semi-annual pledge reminder process.


  • Evaluates research of donor prospects for capacity and inclination to give. Tracks donors who are capable of giving at the $500+ level and works with the Director of Development to develop a comprehensive plan to solicit, upgrade and steward these donors.


  • Coordinates access and utilization of Central development resources such as the offices of gift planning, regional & international programs, and development research.


  • Other duties as assigned.





Bachelor’s degree required and at least two years of development experience required, preferably in an academic medical center or university setting. Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. This position requires strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.  Also required are very strong computer skills, organizational skills, analytical and problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and some knowledge of accounting theory and practices.  The incumbent must be able to work independently as well as part of a team, perform under pressure and within time constraints with a high degree of accuracy and diplomacy.



  • Ability to work independently, manage projects and determine priorities, and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work with broadly diverse groups of constituents to achieve fundraising goals including donors, alumni, faculty, department chairs and administrators, fundraising colleagues and institutional leadership.
  • Comfortable working in a complex, multi-department organization and dynamic, fast-paced environment. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Excellent writing, editorial and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage more than one project simultaneously.
  • Strong computer literacy skills and the ability to learn new software. Specifically, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability and willingness to travel, and be flexible with scheduling as this position requires occasional evening and/or weekend hours.
