General Description

 

Regional Programs is a centrally-positioned team of frontline fundraisers within Development and Alumni Relations charged with representing the breadth of Johns Hopkins University and the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine to alumni, parents, grateful patients, and friends in prescribed regions across the country. The team is comprised of a director, to which this position reports, four major gift officers, one additional assistant director of development, and two coordinators.

 

The Assistant Director of Development role is ideal for those advancement professionals interested in gaining or building frontline skills with a variety of different constituencies, and learning more about how to successfully navigate a highly complex, multilayered organization. Working in close partnership with colleagues across the institution, the Assistant Director of Development will pursue approximately 100 substantive contacts per year with both affiliated and unaffiliated prospects through a variety of communication methods. While interaction with constituents at all stages in the development cycle will occur, the Assistant Director will primarily focus on the discovery and qualification of prospects with widely varying backgrounds and institutional affiliations. The nature of the support this position provides is critical – and helps add value and extend the capacity of the teams served by Regional Programs. Those with deft interpersonal skills and collaborative instincts, flexibility, patience, intellectual curiosity, and an interest in advancing the mission of one of the world’s great research universities and academic medical centers would fit well in this role.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Make 100 substantive contacts per year through face-to-face visits, phone calls, e-mail, and/or the use of other innovative tools for outreach and engagement;
  • Discover and qualify annual and major gift prospects, and work to incorporate them into the prospect pools for divisions and units;
  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward select groups of prospects in partnership with Regional, divisional, and departmental gift officers;
  • Understand and leverage opportunities to further engage prospects, including those specific to volunteerism;
  • Collaborate with teammates and partners across the institution to identify opportunities; craft and execute projects to help address these needs – often as an embedded team member in these units;
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues in each division/department of the institution;
  • Learn and actively refresh knowledge of school/divisional/departmental priorities and activities;
  • Utilize ALADIN database and related systems to track activity and analyze data;
  • Develop a training and development plan that leverages institutional and development-specific groups, events, and volunteer opportunities.

 

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required. Two years related experience required. Demonstrated success in building relationships and engaging constituents, preferably in an institution of higher education or an academic medical center, is preferred.

 

Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

 

JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

 

Special skills and knowledge: Excellent communication skills and attention to detail; ability to work as part of an effective team securing the success of the Development and Alumni Relations program.
