Assistant Director of Development, Regional Programs

Overview: The Assistant Director of Development, Regional Programs role is ideal for those advancement professionals interested in establishing fundraising competencies, gaining or sharpening frontline skills with a variety of different constituencies, and learning how to successfully navigate a highly complex, multilayered organization.


While interaction with constituents at all stages in the development cycle will occur, the Assistant Director will primarily focus on the discovery and qualification of prospects with widely varying backgrounds and institutional affiliations. This work will be supplemented by special projects and/or embedded assignments with partner development offices that add value and extend the capacity of the teams served by Regional Programs.


Team Description: Regional Programs is a centrally-positioned team of frontline fundraisers within Development and Alumni Relations charged with representing the breadth of Johns Hopkins University and Medicine to alumni, parents, grateful patients, and friends in prescribed regions across the country. The team is comprised of a director, to which this position reports, two major gift officers, one major gift officer/pipeline manager, one additional assistant director of development, and two coordinators.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • In year one, pursue 100+ substantive contacts through face-to-face visits, phone calls, e-mail, and/or the use of other innovative tools for outreach and engagement, building to an annual work plan with annual giving targets in subsequent years;
  • Discover and qualify targeted numbers of annual and major gift prospects, and work to incorporate them into the prospect pools for divisions and units, as well as the Regional Programs pipeline;
  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward select groups of prospects in partnership with Regional, divisional, and departmental gift officers;
  • Collaborate with teammates and partners across the institution to identify opportunities, and craft and execute projects to help address these needs – often as an embedded team member in these units;
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues across the institution;
  • Learn and actively refresh knowledge of school/divisional/departmental collaborative partnerships, priorities, and shared goals;
  • Engage in team-wide activities, knowledge-sharing, and supportive dialogue;
  • Represent Regional Programs and Central Services in Development and Alumni Relations activities and institution-wide programming where appropriate;
  • Leverage the Regional Programs pipeline, and utilize ALADIN database and related systems to track progress and analyze data at a high level;
  • Develop a training and development plan that leverages institutional and development-specific groups, events, and volunteer opportunities.


Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree and two years of related experience are required. Demonstrated success in building relationships and engaging constituents, preferably in an institution of higher education or an academic medical center, is preferred.  Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
