General Description:

 

The Assistant Director will play an integral role in identifying and developing a strong pipeline of prospects for the Wilmer Eye Institute through Wilmer’s Annual Fund and alumni giving. This position will manage a portfolio of annual donors and alumni (100 prospects) with a focus on the solicitation of high-end annual gifts ($1,000 to $25,000). The Assistant Director will also be responsible for qualifying, cultivating, and stewarding unmanaged donors ($250 to $10,000) through calls, visits, and other personal communication to develop a robust pool of major and planned giving prospects, helping to transition donors to major gift portfolios, as appropriate.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

 

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the research, teaching, and clinical programs and priorities of the Wilmer Eye Institute, in order to represent these needs both internally and externally.

 

  • Under the leadership of Assistant/Associate Director, manage Wilmer’s Annual Fund, developing a comprehensive program to solicit, upgrade, and steward unmanaged annual donors to build a robust major gift and planned giving pipeline.

 

  • Analyze data to identify new prospects capable of giving at the $1,000+ level, and track giving trends, measuring the effectiveness of Annual Fund efforts. Produce reports (financial and/or development) as required, utilizing Excel, Access, Word, and ALADIN (a development office database system). Must use independent judgment to ensure that reports are accurate.

 

  • Manage a portfolio of annual donors and alumni (approximately 100 prospects) to strengthen the relationship between Development and the donor, completing 50 substantive actions each year and soliciting high-end annual gifts ($1,000 to $25,000).

 

  • Schedule and complete 60 in-person visits with annual donors and alumni each year to qualify, cultivate, solicit, and/or steward giving.

 

  • Make 10-30 calls per month to thank unmanaged donors giving at the $250+ level to steward and qualify donors, relaying information to major gift officers, as appropriate.

 

  • Maintain donor/prospect records in ALADIN and RM and enter faculty referrals.

 

  • Serve as liaison to the Office of Medical Annual Giving (OMAG), managing distribution of OMAG lists and draft correspondence to Wilmer Development Team for review. Ensure OMAG receives all final materials within the required timeframe.

 

  • Collaborate with the Office of Gift Planning and with Wilmer Development Team on communication and cultivation strategies for planned giving prospects.

 

  • Manage overall alumni engagement strategy and process for Wilmer in coordination with Wilmer Marketing to increase alumni giving through personal communication, programming, and events.

 

  • Provide Development support to Assistant Chief(s) of Service (ACS) to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward potential prospects in support of research, education, and patient-care initiatives.

 

  • Assist with planning and execution of major development events, such as Chair or Professorship dedications, as needed.

 

  • Represent the Wilmer Eye Institute on the Annual Giving Roundtable group, Annual Giving Liaison Group, and other institutional groups as appropriate.

 

Other duties as assigned.

 

The Assistant Director must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and must be able to use good judgment and juggle priorities in a fast-paced environment.  Must be able to use discretion, handling confidential information.  Must be able to forge strong relationships with Wilmer’s grateful patients, volunteers and friends and other members of the Development and Alumni Relations team.

 

Qualifications: 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Demonstrated abilities as a writer and editor.
  • At least two years’ related experience required; preference given to candidates with development experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills. Ability to work independently, ability to work as part of a team, and ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Strong computer literacy skills and the aptitude to learn new software.
  • Ability to perform within severe time constraints with the highest degree of accuracy, effectiveness, and diplomacy.
  • Willingness to travel and to work occasional evening or weekend hours as needed.

 

JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
