Assistant Director of Graphic Design for Annual Giving

In a newly created role within the expanding Office of Annual Giving (OAG) at Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the Assistant Director of Graphic Design reports to the Sr. Graphic Designer on the OAG Marketing & Content team.

The Assistant Director of Graphic Design supports the design and production needs of OAG and serves as a key partner in the creation of annual giving solicitation and stewardship content. This role will design artwork and content for multi-channel (direct mail, direct e-mail, crowdfunding, social media), multi-unit solicitation, and stewardship campaigns, with an emphasis on the campaigns related to undergraduate alumni. The position will contribute to the strategy and design of over 100 unique solicitations produced annually by OAG towards the goal of retaining and acquiring donors.

The Office of Annual Giving is a growing team that currently consists of 20 colleagues who provide annual giving services to the nine schools of the university, various departments of Johns Hopkins Medicine, and several centers and institutes, totaling nearly 40 partners. These annual giving services include developing comprehensive and integrated direct-response solicitation strategies that are optimal for each unit.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Create and update graphics for OAG’s direct response services, which include visual assets for direct mail, mass email, videos, social media, print and digital ads, websites, external and internal toolkits, infographics, crowdfunding campaigns, and other marketing assets as needed.
  • Work in partnership with OAG’s writer to create and maintain social media calendar and create and post corresponding graphic assets.
  • Manage monthly anniversary solicitations with vendor, which are a key direct-mail and direct-email solicitation directed to our most recent and loyal donors.
  • Ensure that OAG’s visual assets for over 100 unique solicitations a year are within the brand guidelines and brand vision of both the University as well as the individual schools and divisions.
  • Initiate and manage direct mail projects with 3-4 different print vendors, ensuring that the appropriate segments for the solicitations are correctly identified and executed.
  • Maintain regular communication with OAG team members and DAR partners to fulfill ongoing design needs.
  • Keep informed of new design trends and capabilities, and present fresh ideas to the marketing team to inform upcoming campaigns.
  • Ability to learn new tools and do self-guided work within a fast-paced environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in fine arts, graphic design, or related field.
  • Two years' experience and a portfolio.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong portfolio that reflects current design trends and showcases a broad range of clients/challenges/solutions.
  • Solid proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite programs (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of graphic design principles and production methods.
  • Strong typography, layout, and composition skills.
  • Skills in HTML and email design a plus.
  • Ability to create short videos.
  • Experience in creating creative assets for higher education institutions or a closely related industry.
  • Ability to establish priorities, set objectives, and achieve goals.
  • Design portfolio required.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
