General:

The Office of Principal Gifts is part of the highly successful Johns Hopkins Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) group. The Office of Principal Gifts provides leadership and efforts to DAR efforts to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individuals capable of gifts of $5 million or greater. Our fast-paced office plays a critical role in securing gifts that are truly transformational for Johns Hopkins. The office manages a select group of high-level prospective donors and works closely with the president, provost, and trustees.

 

The Assistant Director of Principal Gifts will report to the Senior Director of Principal Gifts. The successful candidate will be responsible for gathering and communicating relevant data (including budget development, peer benchmarking) in appropriate formats for principal-level proposals ($5 million and up) and also gift agreements and stewardship reports. The Assistant Director will report on principal gifts progress and forecasts and will partner with colleagues across the institution to ensure that information is accurate and current.

 

(30%) Develop budget models for principal-level proposals, gift agreements, and MOUs (particularly regarding gifts of $25 million and up) in coordination with the Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations, Associate Vice President for Principal Gifts, the Office of Finance and Administration, and/or others as appropriate.

 

(30%) In partnership with the Associate Vice President for Principal Gifts and Senior Director, support the ongoing, personalized stewardship of principal gift relationships for Johns Hopkins, including the writing and editing of stewardship and related materials, particularly related to the impact of philanthropic support.

 

(20%) Identify the data resources available and needed to create a set of reporting tools for principal gifts that help understand the history, the current state, and the forecast of the program for the next 3-5 years.

 

(15%) In partnership with the Senior Director of Principal Gifts, refine and implement a regular system of reporting for the Office of Principal Gifts. This will also include partnership with Relationship Management and DAR Business Services to set out best practices for identifying, collecting, and recording data.

 

(5%) Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required. Two years of progressively responsible related experience. Prior development experience and understanding of the donor cycle (identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship) required. Candidate must have strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills, in addition to the ability to deal effectively with a broad spectrum of professionals, including university leadership, and the ability to demonstrate good judgment and decision-making.  Successful candidates will have at least an intermediate skill level in Microsoft Excel. A writing sample will be required as part of the application.

Preferred Qualifications:

Past experience in marketing and communications and/or relevant experience in investor relations.  Ideal candidates will have experience with presentation software (PowerPoint, Prezi, etc.) and desktop publishing software (InDesign, Quark XPress, etc.).
