Assistant Store Manager


General Summary:

The Assistant Store Manager provides assistance and support in the daily operation of the Technology Center’s retail operations and reports to the Technology Center Store Manager. The Technology Center is an Apple Authorized Campus Store (AACS) which provides sales, consulting and technical support to the Johns Hopkins community of students, faculty and staff. 


Essential Job Functions:

  • Ensure daily store operations are executed in accordance with established policies and procedures, including opening and closing routines.
  • Greet and provide service to customers, faculty, staff, and students in a friendly, respectful, and helpful manner, including assisting customers with purchase selections.
  • Process sales transactions accurately and according to established procedures.
  • Coordinate with the manager and the divisional web content manager on creating, deploying and managing an effective web and social media presence.
  • Assist manager with sales promotions, special events (e.g. Apple Tech Talk seminars), and representation at other campus programs/events (e.g. Orientation, Open House, etc.).
  • Ensure certification requirements are met, including Apple Sale Web (ASW), and that student store staff have completed required certifications as needed.
  • Prepare merchandise displays, assist with store layout and advertising copy; organize racks and shelves to maintain the visual appeal of the store.
  • Work as a team with the manager and student workers to select new merchandise and organize the campus store to manager’s satisfaction.
  • When not serving customers assists with pricing merchandise, stocking shelves, updating inventory, and helping keep an orderly stock area.
  • In cooperation with the manager, maintain positive, ongoing relationships with campus contacts and continue to develop new contacts through campus outreach initiatives.
  • Assist manager as needed with back office functions, including preparation of invoices, coordination of orders and shipments, inventory control, recording of payments, and reconciliations, ensuring all functions are completed in accordance with company directives and/or policies and procedures, including operation and daily reconciliation of credit card and departmental charges.
  • Answer routine inquiries and escalated complaints; answer phone in a pleasant manner and take accurate messages.
  • Assist with supervising and assigning daily tasks to student workers.
  • Ensure the security of company assets and the safety of employees and customers.
  • Keep up-to-date on current computer/technology products industry trends by reading newsletters, reviews, meeting with Apple representative, etc.
  • Assist with routine store inventory and fiscal year-end store inventory procedures.
  • Must be able to work during the day, afternoon, and weekends for events and during the manager’s absence due to sickness or vacation.
  • Must be able to function and reason independently in order to maintain the operation of the campus store in the manager’s absence.



  • Associate’s Degree required. 
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.



  • Minimum of 1 year of work experience in a retail environment with a strong customer service component required.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Strong customer service component. 1-2 years of computer-related support background, with Apple product knowledge and ASW certification strongly preferred.
  • Experience in managing and supervising student staff would be helpful.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Customer service oriented, with excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and handle multiple assignments in fast-paced environment.
  • Supervisory skills necessary in assisting with assigning and directing work activities of student workers.
  • Proven experience with POS and inventory systems required.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
