Associate, Strategic Initiatives

University Student Services (USS) is a division of Johns Hopkins University serving all nine of the University’s academic divisions. In its role, the University Student Services’ Finance Team works collaboratively across the University to support high-level strategic planning issues and initiatives related to Student Services, and includes the areas of Strategic Initiatives, Capital Finance, and Reporting & Analysis.  The operating budget under management supports student services across all nine JHU schools and includes Student Affairs, Auxiliaries, Admissions and Financial Aid, Integrative Learning and Life Design, Student Health and Well Being, Student Enrollment and Account Management/Office of the University Registrar, and the Center for Diversity and Inclusion.


We are seeking an Associate, Strategic Initiatives who will support the Sr. Strategic Finance Associate in the distillation of complex data into useful financial reports and tools as well as on the creation of strategic financial presentations to inform decision-making among senior leadership on a wide range of USS financial strategy and policy issues. This role will work to provide analytic capacity on issues and initiatives of interest to university and department leadership as they relate to Student Services and will also act as a strategic consultant to the USS Finance Team on best practices for data gathering and data quality.


Reporting to the Sr. Strategic and Finance Associate, the position will manage a portfolio of strategic and financial analysis projects and work with other members of finance, USS and other key stakeholders across the University to move these projects forward. The incumbent will work collaboratively with senior staff across University Student Services, within University Administration, and within the divisions, among others.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Utilize SAP and Oracle reporting tools to provide decision support by delivering accurate and timely financial analyses for strategic initiatives, issues and projects of high priority for senior leadership, as well as for the regular financial reporting cycle of USS Finance.
  • Support the Sr. Strategic and Finance Associate in creating financial models, long-range forecasts, operating and capital budgets to solve complex problems and answer nuanced questions.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Business Solutions to develop and oversee a USS data strategy that leverages modern technologies for data collection, compilation, and dissemination.
  • Improve and refine existing financial models to accurately forecast critical financial and operational metrics against strategic goals.
  • Become a trusted partner and advisor to senior leadership on topics related to financial analytics and modeling.
  • Support the conducting of comprehensive benchmark studies on strategic, financial, and operational topics to drive improvement and enhance existing processes.
  • Create high quality presentation materials and memoranda in order to communicate context, findings, and recommendations to senior university leadership.
  • Work independently to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Identifies and mitigates risks associated with projects and project timelines; proactively manages any potential roadblocks and works with teams/stakeholders to ensure projects stay on track.
  • Establishes strong partnerships with key staff in the academic divisions and University Administration.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant discipline.
  • Financial Analysis, project management and consulting experience with 5 years of related work experience. 
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Finance, Business, Public Administration or a related field is highly preferred.
  • Financial analysis, project management, and/or consulting experience desired with 5-7 years of related work experience demonstrating increasing responsibility.
  • Knowledge of the Oracle Smartview reporting tool.
  • Knowledge of SAP.

Starting Salary Range: $73,300 - $128,300 Annually ($118,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
