General Description

 

The Associate Director is responsible for cultivating a robust community of alumni innovators and entrepreneurs whose time, networks and financial gifts are leveraged to enhance the university’s innovation ecosystem. Key responsibilities include alumni relationship management, programming and annual giving. Reporting to the Director of Innovation Initiatives and Corporate Relations, this is a new position with the ability to influence the development of the Innovation Initiatives program. This highly collaborative position requires close working relationships with alumni relations and annual giving colleagues across the university to identify and cultivate high-potential relationships. It will also require close coordination with the faculty and student innovators across campus, the professional staff that facilitate innovation and entrepreneurship at Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV), and the networks of mentors, industry partners, investors and startup executives that comprise our growing entrepreneurial ecosystem. Duties include:

 

Alumni Relationship Management

 

Identify and build relationships with alumni in the startup / business community, in coordination with school-based Development & Alumni Relations peers and the Office of Leadership Programs.

 

Identify and coordinate substantive alumni engagement opportunities, with a particular focus on matching constituents with Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures / FastForward / FastForward U needs (e.g. mentoring, reviewing/judging, and investing) in addition to other innovation activities across campus.

 

Program Design and Management

 

Design and manage programs that support community building by engaging innovation-interested alumni in personalized, unique ways.

 

Execute alumni relations programming in partnership with the Office of Alumni Relations, Affinity Programs, including organizing social gatherings at industry events, like the JP Morgan Healthcare Conference, at Reunion weekends, Innovation Roundtables for industry leaders, Founders’ Forums, and corporate programs.

 

Coordinate on-campus and regional alumni/constituent events, including assisting with invitation lists, briefing materials, managing event website, and on site execution as needed.

 

Supprt Hopkins Founders’ Pledge programming led by Director.

 

Annual Giving Fundraising

 

Develop creative strategies for cultivating a culture of giving back among up-and-comers and individuals from the innovation ecosystem. Manage or support discovery prospect pool of up-and-comers, entrepreneurs, industry experts, investors, and corporate sponsors targeting approximately 50 prospects in the $1K - $50K range for specific visit, engagement and solicitation strategies.

 

Work with the Office of Annual Giving, Office of Development Research, Office of Leadership Programs and individual schools to identify and cultivate new leads.

 

Serve as project manager to support gift conversations with up-and-comers and other prospects from the Innovation Ecosystem; liaise with and support Office of Annual Giving and coordinate with school-based annual giving and major giving officers.

 

Communications

 

Execute, plan and coordinate engagement communications, including the JHTV Competitive Edge newsletter, the Hopkins Founders’ Pledge and other communications.

 

Liaise with JHTV, the Office of Alumni Relations, DAR and the President’s communications teams on alumni stories and PR support.

 

Research and Tracking

 

Develop analysis tools to track annual giving and alumni relations activities to determine effectiveness; identify opportunities for programmatic collaboration; and produce reports for senior staff.

 

Maintain and update prospect lists and design research projects to identify new leads.

 

Provide support for prospect management in the form of ALADIN improvements.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

 

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Three years related experience required, preferably in startup work and either fundraising, customer/external relations, project management or event planning.
  • Additional education may be substituted for some experience.

  • Strong interpersonal, relationship-building and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work with diverse audiences and speak comfortably to executives as well as small groups.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to execute on a vision and develop appropriate timelines, meet deadlines and communicate expectations
