Associate Director, Regional, Student and Young Alumni Programs

The Associate Director of Regional, Student and Young Alumni Programs (RSYAP) is a key member of the Office of Alumni Relations team. This position manages engagement opportunities and relationship building for current undergraduate students and Homewood undergraduate young alumni (2013-2022). The Associate Director has three primary focus areas: 1) engage and steward young alumni, 2) create connections between young alumni and current undergraduate students, and 3) build awareness of alumni programs for current undergraduates. Johns Hopkins University has just over 11,000 undergraduate alumni that have graduated within the past ten years. Programs for undergraduate students and undergraduate young alumni support a successful transition into the alumni community. For over a decade, these programs have introduced current students to alumni initiatives, fostered young alumni networks in cities across the country, and built mutually beneficial connections between the two groups. These early engagement programs help drive our students’ identities as members of the Johns Hopkins alumni community and cultivate a pipeline of lifelong alumni supporters and leaders.


The Associate Director reports to the Senior Associate Director of the Regional, Student, and Young Alumni Programs team, and serves as an integral part of the Office of Alumni Relations team. This position represents the university at various functions to a constituency that includes: alumni, students, parents, prospective students, and friends of the university. This position helps to fulfill the priorities, goals, and recommendations outlined in the 2020-2025 Alumni Engagement Strategic Plan.


Specific Responsibilities:


A. Deepen current students’ connections to the alumni community, charting clear pathways through which they will identify with – and as–engaged alumni (35%)

  • Serve as the Advisor to the Alumni Student Ambassadors (ASA), a group of approximately 30 undergraduate students charged with driving connections between current students and alumni; specifically oversee Hopkins Gives Back year-round programming (e.g. Thankful Thursdays, Pics for Professors, etc.). Manage ASA staffing requests from all Development and Alumni Relations partners. Work closely with the ASA student Director.
  • Demonstrate continued collaboration between ASA and the Hopkins Fund Student Philanthropy group; initiate joint training, meetings, campus-wide messaging, and additional data and idea sharing.
  • Through strong and efficient management of logistics, communications, and production, serve as a project manager for annual initiatives with Student Affairs: welcome/farewell events, summer Student Sendoffs, Hoptoberfest, Lighting of the Quads, Senior Socials, Student and Alumni Mixers, etc. Partner with other Associate Directors and Sr. Coordinator for execution and organization for said programs.
  • Develop strong relationships with student-centered campus partners including Life Design Lab, Student Involvement, Parent Programs, Undergraduate Admissions, Multicultural Affairs, Athletics, and Center for Social Concern, among others.
  • Manage data collection efforts for graduating seniors and young alumni; initiate campaigns to update contact information and student organization affiliations to improve the accuracy of data.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for individual students and student organizations wishing to connect and network with alumni, including the promotion of OneHop and additional platforms to the student body.
  • Facilitate an on-campus student and alumni meetup series, one that would allow current students to meet and hear about the experiences of local graduates in the area. Offer throughout the Maryland/DC area targeting various JHU campuses throughout the year.
  • Furthermore, explore frequent on-campus opportunities for students and local young alumni to network with one another in casual settings.


B. Identify and develop future young alumni leaders, establishing a diverse and inclusive pipeline that will cultivate and support increased alumni giving to the university (35%)

  • Identify and evaluate potential volunteers through personal visits and engagement in the Baltimore/DC area; conduct a minimum of 10 on-site and off-site (or remote) student/young alumni meetings and visits per month to meet a goal of 75 visits per year.
  • Work with the Office of Annual Giving, Office of Development Research, Office of Leadership Programs, and individual schools to identify and cultivate new leads, and to assist with stewardship of existing donors, when appropriate. Serve as a primary or secondary relationship manager for key volunteer leaders within the Baltimore/DC area.
  • Develop, deploy, and promote programs that support the alumni engagement strategic plan. This includes both creating new initiatives and evaluating existing ones to determine opportunities to add to, strengthen, or replace programs. This could include an increase in young alumni activities and student-centered efforts.
  • Represent Johns Hopkins University through frequent and varied interactions with key alumni leaders, university leadership, donors, faculty, and current students.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the programs, volunteer opportunities, and university initiatives to develop speaking points for alumni events and individual visits.


C. Committee Oversight and Campus Partnerships (30%)

  • Serve as the staff liaison to Alumni Council committees or task forces as appropriate; assist council members with the execution of their strategic initiatives (e.g. Ring Program, Journal Article Club, Welcome/Graduation gifts, etc.).

  • Proactively collaborate and create partnerships with campus partners at the various divisions to build relationships with the likes of Student Affairs, Student Government Association, and Student Councils at each division, to further pathways for alumni to engage with the school.

  • Participate in regular meetings to share information on alumni programming and look for opportunities to collaborate with our Homewood divisions (KSAS & WSE). Ensure our partners are aware of the engagement opportunities and have a pathway to sharing prospects for speaking and furthering volunteer leadership development.

  • Serve as the Office of Alumni Relations’ liaison to selected campus offices to include Undergraduate Admissions and Parent Programs; providing support for the Hopkins Admissions Recruiting Council (HARC) and Admitted Student Receptions. This includes serving on task forces, and search committees, attending regular meetings, and collaborating on programs and co-sponsorships as appropriate.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Three years related experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Additional experience in alumni relations, student affairs, event production and management, fundraising, volunteer management, or donor relations is preferred.
  • The successful candidate will possess the ability to 1) manage multiple projects with critical attention to detail, 2) both manage and speak at events in a calm and professional manner, 3) oversee the set-up of events including the management of vendors and troubleshooting of barriers to success, 4) collaborate on marketing and promotional pieces to include the gathering of stories for magazine and web content and writing and design of web pages and event invitations, 5) develop a thorough understanding of the Development and Alumni Relations database system known as ALADIN; specifically running queries and reports, 6) develop a proficient understanding of the Relationship Management module and add meaningful data to alumni profiles, 7) staff regional chapter events, Alumni Leadership Weekend, Homecoming/Reunion and Young Alumni Weekend activities as necessary, 8) execute other special projects and tasks as assigned by supervisor.
  • The successful candidate must have the ability to travel locally, typically 1-2 nights per month.
  • The successful candidate must be able to utilize computers for word processing, mail merging, maintaining lists, updating database records, and producing various reports.

Team members must have the ability to take initiative and function independently and as part of a team as well as work in a fast-paced, creative and deadline-oriented environment.
