Associate Director, Volunteer Engagement

The Office of Volunteer Engagement (OVE) seeks to engage, steward, and recognize Johns Hopkins’ leadership volunteers according to their interests through meaningful activities that encourage and recognize their long-term support of the institution and the positive impact of their involvement and philanthropy. Developing and maintaining a community of engaged leadership volunteers is vital to the institution and the success of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR).  In pursuit of these goals, OVE collaborates with a wide range of colleagues across Johns Hopkins University and Medicine.


This position reports directly to the Director of Volunteer Engagement, managing specific programs and projects to advance the engagement, stewardship, and recognition of volunteers across the institution at both the divisional level and as a central services bureau.


Specific Responsibilities:


Volunteer engagement and support: (45%)

  • Serve as the liaison between OVE and a portfolio of assigned development offices (DOFFs) throughout the university and medicine. 
  • Advise divisional offices in best practices in volunteer recruitment, orientation, ongoing education, involvement, and recognition.
  • Lead the planning and oversight of the Johns Hopkins in Action community service program to include overall program promotion and resourcing, collaboration with DOFFs, partnership with talent management and human resources regarding employee engagement efforts, and creation of strategic partnerships to ensure success and growth of the program. 
  • Manage and evaluate the Board of Trustees acknowledgement program for new major gift donors with the assistance of the Development Coordinator for Volunteer Engagement.
  • Aid in the development and implementation of institutional volunteer engagement events, including but not limited to the biennial Volunteer Leadership Summit.
  • During a comprehensive fundraising campaign, assist to develop, organize, and manage a volunteer campaign structure.
  • Oversee the creation of biannual welcome letters from the chair of the Board of Trustees to new advisory board/council members.
  • Partner with Development Communications to identify, curate, and produce relevant news stories and updates pertaining to the Johns Hopkins enterprise to share through Hopkins Highlights, a quarterly e-newsletter sent to volunteers to help them become educated ambassadors for the institute.
  • Staff volunteer/donor events as needed.


Operations: (45%)


  • Develop and maintain a standard set of metrics to measure the overall health/performance of advisory boards/councils and the impact of volunteers (individually and as a whole) on their respective board(s), as well as the institution.
  • Educate and train colleagues on engagement tracking and reporting, properly reading and interpreting data, and using metrics to make strategic decisions regarding advisory board/council and individual volunteer management.
  • Maintain an online set of institutional guidelines, policies and procedures, resources, and expectations for all fundraising volunteers to follow as Johns Hopkins advisory board/council members.
  • Develop and maintain policies and procedures related to the engagement and stewardship of volunteer leaders and principal donors as appropriate.
  • Manage updates to the Advisory Council Handbook, an internal resource to support DAR staff in the management of their boards/councils.



Other: (10%)

  • Serve on institutional working groups/committees as a volunteer engagement representative and lead volunteer engagement training(s) as needed.
  • Manage, coordinate, or assist with other projects and events as required.



Bachelor’s degree with 3 years of progressively responsible experience in development, communications, customer service, or a related field. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to analyze and present data effectively. Proactive, a self-starter, with the ability to make independent decisions and the discernment to know when such independence is warranted. Excellent organizational and project management skills with ability to handle multiple priorities and to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Experience of supervising administrative staff effectively. Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook), and previous experience working with databases. This position requires a very high level of professionalism, discretion, diplomacy, and customer service.


JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
