Associate Director Business Development

Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures is seeking an Associate Director of Business Development (Managers Corporate Partnership) who will report to the Senior Director and will independently perform a variety of activities intended to promote the research and related expertise/know-how of Johns Hopkins faculty in order to secure new industry-sponsored research. Responsible for developing and implementing internal and external business development initiatives; fostering relationships with industry representatives; and identifying and pitching potential research for industry sponsorship.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements Corporate Partnership Business Development strategy focused on new partnerships across life sciences and non-life sciences. 
  • Serves as the business intelligence and marketing lead to identify winning strategy based on differentiation and competitive advantage of Johns Hopkins faculty research.
  • Coordinates all Corporate Partnership Business Development efforts to ensure consistency and to maximize value for Johns Hopkins.
  • Uses a data-driven approach to source, generate leads, and perform outreach to develop new partnerships.
  • Identifies target industry partners and penetration strategies that significantly drive maximum value from Johns Hopkins research.
  • Creates innovative strategies for identifying and attracting new industry partners and builds high-impact programs in academia/industry collaborations.
  • Develops innovative marketing and outreach strategies for lead generation and marketing to reach new industry partners.
  • Prepares and pitches high-value Johns Hopkins research that are in-line with industry needs.
  • Leverages tools, databases, and technology to manage relationships and tracks and communicates objectives and key results for areas of responsibility.
  • Establishes and maintains strategic contacts in industry, including (but not limited to) pharmaceutical, biotech, health care IT, physical science, and medical device companies.
  • Contributes to industry contact database to be used by JHTV for push and pull marketing efforts and general communications.
  • Negotiates agreement terms, with advisement from the Office of Research Administration and other Johns Hopkins departments, to ensure Principal Investigators and the University are protected.
  • Oversees day to day management of new large-scale industry partnerships, including reporting milestones and other progress.

 

Scope of Responsibility:

  • Works under the direct supervision of the Sr. Director Corporate Partnerships.
  • Works closely with communications, ventures, and licensing teams.
  • Works independently with all relevant technology tools to perform internal and external research on technologies.
  • Knows the formal and informal departmental goals, standards, policies and procedures which may include some familiarity of other departments within the school/division.
  • Is sensitive to the interrelationship of both people and functions within the department.
  • Performs duties under strict adherence to the university’s Intellectual Property Policy.

 

Decision Making:

  • Makes recommendations but not the final decision concerning Corporate Partnerships and technology marketing.

 

Authority:

  • May direct the activities of staff or student interns or a function.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Master’s Degree in Science or Engineering, or MBA with an undergraduate degree in science required. Other advance degrees or combinations with directly related industry experience will also be considered.
  • Five (5) years of business development experience in industry required, as evidenced by management of a large partnership. 

 

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident required, due to Federal Export Controls.
  • A self-starter and team player with the ability to interact with all levels within the university and with industry.
  • Must have an excellent, professional rapport, exceptional oral and written communication skills and a strong customer service orientation.
  • Must be able to deal tactfully and professionally with others in stressful situations.
  • Must be well organized, detail-oriented, and have the ability to perform and manage multiple projects at a time meeting concurrent deadlines.
  • Must be deadline-driven and able to handle flexible hours, including some weeknight work for hosting events or dinners.
  • Must be able to work competently with Microsoft Office and other desktop applications. Experience with Salesforce or other CRM systems is a plus.
  • Experience with various software applications (e.g. spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical and graphic packages), to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
