Associate Director Civic Engagement

General Summary/Purpose:

The Center for Social Concern (CSC), housed on the Homewood Campus of Johns Hopkins University, is focused on providing students and community partners the opportunity to connect, learn, and serve together. With a variety of direct service, student organization development, public service, and reflection opportunities, the CSC strives to engage all JHU students in a meaningful experience within their communities and their areas of passion. 

The CSC leadership team is comprised of one Executive Director and two Associate Directors, to support the staff and student leadership within programs. This role, as Associate Director, will focus on programming and assessment will play a pivotal role in the creation, evaluation, and enhancement of opportunities within the CSC. This position will be responsible for leading the team of individuals who implement programming in the areas of education, public service, student leadership, and community based learning.

The Associate Director will provide oversight and leadership to staff in the programming roles. A primary role will include the fostering of team-based initiatives and supporting the year-round community service and civic engagement programming that staff members are implementing.  These roles include experience based community service programs, civic engagement initiatives, community-based learning, episodic direct service, and education-based programs.  The Associate Director will be responsible for evaluating effectiveness of the programs and working as part of the leadership to set direction for CSC programming and operations. 

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Management:

  • Create and support a team-based culture of staff members, focusing on programmatic excellence for the CSC.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate a team of full-time staff members responsible for the implementation of CSC programming.  These staff members manage the high-risk and high-impact programs, coordinated throughout the CSC.
  • Oversee the management of multiple program budgets
  • Oversee the advisement, evaluation, and management processes of 50+ student organizations and collaborative community based learning, community service, and civic engagement programs.
  • Oversee the process of providing CSC’s Executive Director with programmatic details needed for fundraising, strategic planning, and assessment.

 

Strategic Planning and Program Development:

  • Collaboratively plan for strategic alignment for the Center’s implementation of program activity and operational support. 
  • Develop, track, and revise operational goals in alignment with growth planning for the CSC and focusing on operational excellence in all that we do.
  • Develop programmatic initiatives that create partnerships between students, faculty and community partners which seek to increase the number of students participating in civic engagement experiences
  • Participate in programmatic steering committees as appropriate.
  • Provide guidance and expertise to support the recruitment of faculty, staff, and community partners in the development of academically rigorous community based learning courses and community based participatory research projects.
  • Work collaboratively to develop programmatic initiatives that create partnerships between students, faculty and community partners which seek to increase the number of students participating in civic engagement experiences.

 

Community Relations:

  • Represent the CSC at community partnership meetings sponsored by area community associations and coalitions as appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with the leadership team to plan for and conduct focus groups, evaluations, and/or surveys to community partners to identify community needs and strengthen programs
  • Meet with area stakeholders interested in forming new program collaborations with the CSC

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • This staff role requires a bachelor’s degree, with a preference for an advanced degree or terminal degree, and a minimum of 5 years of experience in higher education, human services, or non-profit work is desirable; background in counseling, student development and programming, or other related field.

 

The Associate Director must have:

  • Demonstrated ability to bring a high degree of enthusiasm, energy, and creativity to civic engagement and team development
  • Excellent judgment in the realms of program development and evaluation, staff supervision, and team-based leadership
  • Previous experience in mentoring and counseling staff members and students
  • Exceptional interpersonal, oral, public speaking, writing, and listening skills with students, faculty, and staff
  • Excellent conflict management skills 
  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds (e.g., class, race, nationality, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, etc.) and to foster sensitivity to diversity and an inclusive campus and community culture
  • Proven ability to cultivate trust and credibility with colleagues and to build positive and effective relationships
  • Have implemented and managed campus programs and/or non-profit programs
  • Strong budgetary, planning, organizational, supervision and management skills and previous experience with event planning 
  • Have a demonstrated knowledge of service-learning pedagogy or community partnership best practices


The Associate Director’s responsibilities may require in-state or out-of-state travel, as well as evening and weekend hours.  Competitive salary commensurate with experience.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
