Associate Director Informationist Services

The Welch Medical Library seeks to hire an Associate Director of Informationist Services. This position is a member of the Library’s senior management team and is responsible for conceiving, planning, directing, and evaluating information services to faculty, staff, fellows, residents, and students in the Schools of Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, and/or the Johns Hopkins Health System. Working in a complex, fast-paced, and distributed information delivery environment the successful applicant will collaborate with other senior managers in the overall development of information services.  The goal of the department is to define and grow our deeply embedded library services while developing innovative information solutions to emerging opportunities to serve the faculty, staff, and students of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions (JHMI).  The information services of the department focus particularly on identifying and meeting needs for health information resources through performing needs assessments, identifying and addressing barriers to access, and the creation of strategic information partnerships between the librarians and staff of the Welch Medical Library and our large user community. This individual will lead the library’s Informationist team at the forefront of revitalizing the way information experts engage with the Johns Hopkins’ academic community and at a time when we are reshaping the way we work to meet the demands of a world changed by COVID-19. As a member of the Library’s senior management team, the Associate Director shares responsibility for determining the future course of the Welch Library, including both strategic and operational planning. This position reports to the Director of the Library.


Specific duties & responsibilities: 
Informationist Services

  • Directs the planning, development, and evaluation of informationist services for the faculty, staff, and students of the Johns Hopkins Schools of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, and the Johns Hopkins Health System. 
  • Evaluates the performance of 10-12 members of the Informationist Services Department in the execution of their information service responsibilities. Informationist service responsibilities include establishing a regular, identifiable service presence with an emphasis on collaborative information partnerships with faculty, students, and staff in their assigned public health, clinical, and/or basic science departments to support the research life cycle; assessing the information needs of assigned departments, developing or coordinating interventions to meet those needs, and evaluating the effectiveness of those programs. 
  • Directs engagement of the informationist team in the curricula of the health sciences schools, residency programs, and other education programs.
  • Ensures that all department members have the necessary skills in literature and information tools, presentation, scientific writing and editing, needs assessment, instruction, and information technology to perform their jobs effectively. Guides each department member in creating and following a professional development plan.
  • Directs the development and use of web-based tools for reporting, internal communication, and collaboration.
  • Directs the planning and development of research projects and in conjunction with other members of the senior management team, the preparation of proposals for external and internal funding of these initiatives. 
  • Ensures communication of advances in health sciences librarianship developed through the informationist services program with the wider library and information service community.
  • Participates in developing budget requirements for program and staff to fulfill these responsibilities.
  • Sets informationist service priorities in accordance with the library’s overall strategic plan.

 

Library Wide Planning and Leadership

  • Serves as a member of the senior management group, which sets the course for the library’s future through strategic and operational planning and professional development activities. 
  • Serves as needed on associated committees both internal and external to the Welch Library. 
  • Works closely with other managers to recommend, develop, and implement new policies and procedures for overall library operations.
  • Maintains awareness of system-wide issues, fosters understanding and support of library programs, and promotes communication among library units and throughout the medical campus; maintains awareness of advances in health sciences librarianship and their local applications.

 

Minimum qualifications (mandatory): 

  • MLS degree in library from an ALA-accredited library school, or library and information science degree.
  • 5 years professional and progressively responsible management library experience.

 

Preferred qualifications: 

  • A second advanced degree in public health, life sciences, informatics, or related degrees preferred.
  • 7 years of experience in management and administration of library and information programs.
  • Experience in writing and editing.
  • Experience assessing service needs, implementing service enhancements and changes, and leading organizational changes is a plus.
  • Experience in the application of information technology, knowledge management, or communication tools to solve problems and meet identified information needs.
  • Capacity to thrive in an environment of change and to foster that capacity in others.
  • Demonstrated ability to cost-effectively assess needs, identify solutions, and see opportunities for delivering information in a complex research, educational or clinical environment.  
  • Demonstrated commitment to a professional community through professional association membership, publications, presentations, and/or professional leadership positions.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
