Associate Director

We are seeking an Associate Director. The Associate Director leads, organizes, and oversees the development of tools, resources and products in support of the GRAD Partnership project.


About the GRAD Partnership: The GRAD Partnership is a unique field-led collaboration among leading research, technical assistance, and advocacy organizations to collectively build the infrastructure and enabling conditions needed to scale high-quality on-track/student success systems nationwide. It is a complex multi-faceted project involved a range of partners, advocacy groups, school districts and Intermediaries.


The Associate Director will lead and manage multiple tool and resource development efforts involving cross-organizational teams. S/he also will lead the development of cross organizational training sessions and workshops to build the capacity of partners, intermediaries and districts to use GP tools and resources. S/he will lead and organize capacity building efforts for high impact Intermediaries in NYC and other regions, as designated. S/he will lead proposal development and lead strategic partnership development in line with strategic objectives of the project.


S/he will contribute to strategy design and proposal development as it pertains to Intermediary certification work and resources to build the capacity of the field more broadly.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • The SPO-II will lead, manage, and organize cross organizational teams to develop a range of high-quality tools, resources and products to contribute to the effective scaling and dissemination of student success systems nationally.
  • The SPO-II will lead and organize capacity building efforts for high impact Intermediaries in NYC and other regions, as designated. This involves leading school and district personnel and other stakeholders in the design and implementation of student success systems and the adaptability to specific regions.


Program and People Management

  • Manage and oversee the development of tools, resources and products to support the scaling of student success systems nationwide.
  • Lead and manage cross-organization workgroups/teams in the development of tools, resources and products ensuring quality, collaboration and adherence to schedules.
  • Work with the PI, the Managing Director, and Deputy Director on GP central leadership team to maintain effective collaboration among all GP partners and intermediaries, meet all project deliverables, and develop knowledge management processes.
  • Lead, organize, and manage training sessions with senior district support personnel, Intermediaries and TA providers on using GP tools, resources and products.
  • Organize and manage R&D efforts with district partners and intermediaries.
  • Advise the broader GRAD Partnership team on the development, uptake and review of all tools, resources and related products.
  • Develop metrics to assess the use of the GRAD Partnership’s tools and resources.
  • Contribute to all other aspects of the central hub team, as needed.
  • Facilitate effective communication and collaboration between organizations as it relates to product and tool development.
  • Facilitate and model frequent, open, ongoing communication with organizing partners, team members, Intermediaries, schools and districts.
  • Lead engagement with internal and external partners.
  • Ensure adherence to JHU regulations and policies. Lead process of using data to inform strategies, work plans, and program direction.
  • Put in place tools, processes, structures to ensure excellence in programs, products, and deliverables to meet program goals.


Technical Work

  • Oversee high level strategy design for Intermediaries and implementation independently.
  • Serve as primary developer of key tools, resources and products and their training materials.
  • Generate and envision new activities, ideas, frameworks, and strategies that further high-level goals of GRAD Partnership, specifically the Intermediary capacity building work.
  • Use, develop, and model tools, processes, best-practices and colleague review to ensure all products and documents are of the highest quality possible.
  • Provide information to others about the quality of work. This includes raising concerns about errors, omissions, and poor-quality products to the staff member responsible for that work, and requesting revision of work that is not high quality.
  • Produce and edit documents, reports, and presentations for GRAD Partnership.
  • Serve as writer for complex proposals related to the GRAD Partnership.
  • In collaboration with research and evaluation division, strategically plan for research, monitoring, and evaluation activities.
  • Lead trainings, workshops, and program support, independently.
  • Demonstrate technical expertise in relevant technical areas (i.e. student success systems, knowledge management, on-track, etc.) and build capacity in others.
  • Demonstrate high level technical communication, including writing reports, creating and giving presentations, and facilitating trainings or group discussions.
  • Ensure excellence in programs, products, and deliverables to meet program goals.


Professional and Organizational Growth

  • Initiate and lead project-wide initiatives, independently.
  • Lead proposal development (technical, budget, coordination) independently. Lead strategic partnership development independently.
  • Represent JHU at relevant external meetings and events: may include delivering technical presentations, networking, relationship building, and initiate and follow through with opportunities for collaboration.
  • Professionally engage and collaborate with other programs across the Center.
  • Recognize and address factors that might strategically impact a program or the Center, and lead implementation of solutions.
  • Proactively seek opportunities to expand leadership and management skills: request or initiate quarterly check-in meetings with supervisor to assess performance, strengths and areas for improvement in your current position, and establish professional goals.


Supervisory Responsibility

  • Experience in leading and managing cross-organization workgroups/teams in the development of tools and resources ensuring quality, collaboration and adherence to schedules.


Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Leadership in district and school capacity building and technical assistance.
  • Leading teams in the development of materials for public use.
  • Writing and facilitation skills preferred.



Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in a related field.
  • Six years related program management experience in public health or medicine.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Six years related program experience in materials development and implementation working with school districts and intermediary organizations.
  • Five year's experience supporting the implementation of early warning, on-track, multi-tiered student support systems.
  • Teaching or school counseling experience.

Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
