Associate Director SOM Central Finance

We are seeking an Associate Director SOM Central Finance. This critical role on the School of Medicine Central Finance team will be responsible for providing leadership guidance across all areas of the Central Finance function, with strong focus on Research Finance and Faculty Practice. The Associate Director will collaborate with School of Medicine (SOM) leaders to manage key areas of expense and identify opportunities for enhanced financial performance. This position works with Finance and Administrative leaders across the SOM and within central JHU functions to ensure enhanced stability and expense management related to the Financial Transformation initiative. The Associate Director also serves as an important member of the Central Finance team responsible for reimagining and redesigning the financial support delivery model across the School of Medicine.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support the Executive Directors for Faculty Practice and Research Finance to regularly meet with department administrators and directors to move forward PI and financial transformation initiatives.
  • Partner with external Huron Consulting team to become an internal subject matter expert on related project duties. These efforts will ensure internal stability and smooth transition, upon the end of the consulting engagement.
  • Functions as primary Central Finance team member responsible for onboarding and training Financial Analysts, to ensure best practice in use of SAP and other, internal systems such as Med Vitals.
  • Train financial analysts to teach them core principles of the business of academic medicine and Johns Hopkins University/Johns Hopkins Medicine policies and practice.
  • Collaborate with the SOM administrative units to manage year-over-year cost increases, identify efficiencies and follow up to guarantee implementation.
  • Meet regularly with Vice Deans to manage costs and optimize financial performance.
  • Serve as the SOM Central Finance initial point of contact and accountable liaison with managing requests from University Administration, Office of Finance and Administration and the Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS) Budget Office and central teams.
  • Evaluate chargeback models of administrative units such as OJHP on a regular basis, to minimize risk to the SOM as units managed by non-SOM business areas change.
  • Lead evaluation of JHM chargebacks, meeting with accountable leaders, and proposing updated methodology to ensure the SOM receives appropriate allocation of central costs.
  • Evaluate all current central costs and create a proposal for new chargebacks to the University and JHHS.
  • Work with other members of the Central Finance team to lead school-wide business process improvement efforts, as requested by executive leadership.
  • Conduct in-depth research on financial, organizational and budget issues to provide senior leadership with information and recommendations, as needed.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert within the Central Finance area to support special projects and compliance efforts, including responsibilities related to the SOM Financial Transformation.
  • Support other related duties as requested.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree required in Business Administration, Finance, Research Administration, or related fields.
  • A minimum of 8 years of progressive management experience in higher education or administrative roles.


Preferred Qualifications
  • An advanced Degree in Business or related field is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of SAP and experience in higher education or non-profit environment is preferred.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Business process management and improvement experience is required.
  • Strong background in research administration, including a working knowledge of federal guidelines such as the Uniform Guidance, FAR provisions, and other federal regulations is required.
  • Must demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of research administration and management principles.
  • Demonstrated experience effectively utilizing planning, organizational, supervisory, and management skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of pre- and post-award sponsored activities involving sponsored projects.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of SAP system including advanced Analysis reporting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the federal guidelines including the Uniform Guidance and the ability to apply the guidance to sponsored projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to make independent judgments and to act on decisions on a daily basis required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work for extended periods of time without direction, prioritize own work, work with flexibility on several tasks simultaneously and to meet concurrent deadlines also required.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage people and operations in a highly complex environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, manage, mentor, and motivate employees in a collaborative environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects and teams that will improve the quality of administrative functions of the school.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sense of complex information and apply a systematic, disciplined approach to solve complex problems, lead consultative engagements, and to adapt to changing situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and provide excellent customer service.
  • Excellent writing skills to draft clear, concise professional reports and correspondence.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills and ability to work cooperatively with people at all organizational levels.


Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of research administration systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply business process improvement tools, i.e. Lean 6 Sigma, to analyze business processes and propose process improvement.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
