Johns Hopkins Children’s Center

The Associate Director of Development will manage private sector fundraising in support of the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. S/he will identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major and annual gifts primarily from individual donors, grateful patients/families, and pediatric faculty and alumni. The Associate Director will be expected to identify prospective major and high-end annual gift prospects for the pediatric areas such as: Gastroenterology and Liver Center, PICU, Nephrology, Rheumatology, Infectious Diseases and Pediatric HIV, and primary on Nursing. In addition, s/he will steward a portfolio of roughly 125 donors, oversee the annual giving program, work with corporate team to build employee giving campaign in conjunction with recognition society, and steward donors according. To be successful in this role, the Associate Director needs a minimum of eight to ten donor/prospect visits per month, a track record of face-to-face solicitations, and to develop a comprehensive understanding of the research, teaching and patient care components of the Children’s Center.

The Associate Director will:

· Articulate the need for support of the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center for unrestricted funds and priority needs.

·Serve as a major gifts fund raiser for the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gifts primarily from unaffiliated individual donors, grateful patient families, corporations, foundations, and pediatric faculty and alumni.

· Work with faculty to identify and qualify new prospects, determine fundraising strategies, make discovery and prospect cultivation calls, and personally communicate with and visit prospects and donors who are capable of making gifts of $50,000 or more primarily.

· Grow the annual giving recognition program, Arch of Hope, to build upon consistent annual donor base and use this program to support growth of the employee giving campaign.

· Coordinate access and utilization of Central development resources such as the offices of gift planning, regional & international programs, corporate and foundation relations, and development research.

· Develop and implement division specific annual giving mail programs that cultivate and solicit unrestricted gifts from current donors, non-donors and prospective grateful patient families.

· Coordinates the production process of direct mail and phonathon with the Office of Medical Annual Giving (OMAG).

· Evaluate research of donor prospects for capacity and inclination to give.


Posted Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required and at least three years of development experience, preferably in an academic medical center or university setting; OR any equivalent combination of the two.  This position requires strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.  Also required are very strong computer skills, organizational skills, analytical and problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and some knowledge of accounting theory and practices.  The incumbent must be able to work independently as well as part of a team, perform under pressure and within time constraints with a high degree of accuracy and diplomacy.



  • Ability to work independently, manage projects and determine priorities, and to maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality
  • Ability to work with broadly diverse groups of constituents to achieve fundraising goals including donors, alumni, faculty, department chairman, hospital and university administration, fundraising colleagues and institutional leadership
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team
  • Excellent writing, editorial and verbal communication skills

·         Strong organizational skills required and ability to manage more than one project simultaneously

  • Strong computer literacy skills required and the ability to learn new software
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Travel required; some night and weekend work required.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
