Associate Director of Development

General Description

 

The success of the School of Nursing fundraising strategy hinges on the identification and cultivation of new prospects, as well as the cultivation and continuation of sustained relationships with alumni, friends and supporters.

 

The Associate Director reports the Associate Dean, Development and Alumni Relations. This individual will work with the School of Nursing faculty and staff to develop comprehensive approaches to secure philanthropic gifts from alumni, friends, and foundations interested in supporting nursing education and research. They will also engage with the School of Nursing and University partners in creative and strategic thinking to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward philanthropic giving as well as assisting with external funding proposals.

This position requires excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively, and to interact successfully with a diverse constituency internally and externally.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Strategize with leadership to determine fundraising and development activities resulting in an annual work plan.
  • Plan and implement major gift strategies in conjunction with the overall work plan; identify and evaluate potential donors; design and implement prospect cultivation and solicitation strategies both prior and subsequent to the initial call.
  • Make discovery and prospect cultivation calls; identify, cultivate and solicit prospects in a timely manner bringing closure to the solicitation process; assume stewardship responsibility for all donors and prospects visited.
  • Develop an annual stewardship plan for donors with life time giving of $100,000 or more.
  • Conduct approximately 15 prospect visits per month, managing an average of 150 prospects per year; work with affiliated and unaffiliated donors who have the capacity to make a major gift ($50,000+). Domestic travel is required.
  • Collaborate with School of Nursing team members including faculty, events management, enrollment services, and administration and finance.
  • Collaborate with central university teams such as Development Research, Gift Planning, Principal Gifts, Alumni Relations and Foundation and Corporate Relations as appropriate.
  • Utilize ALADIN database and related systems to manage prospect and stewardship activities.

 

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required. Three years related experience, with at least one year of professional experience required. Demonstrated success in closing major gifts and individual solicitations, preferably in an institution of higher education.

 

Special skills and knowledge

Excellent communication skills and attention to detail; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and effectively; ability to make independent decisions and the discernment to know when such independence is warranted; ability to work as part of an effective team securing the success of the Development & Alumni Relations program.

NOTE: The successful candidate(s) for this position will be subject to a pre-employment background check. A pre-employment physical is required for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood  tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in the Health Sciences Occupational Health office.
