Associate Director of Life Design Events and Facilities

Co-reporting to the Director of Operations for the Life Design Lab (LDL) and the Director of Operations for Integrated Learning and Life Design (ILLD), we are seeking a Associate Director of Life Design Events and Facilities who will handle the development, planning, and execution of Life Design Lab events in coordination with campus partners, contribute to the engagement of Johns Hopkins University students and faculty, and manage the daily operational needs of the Imagine Center. The incumbent will contribute to developing and implementing the operational strategy and vision for all Integrative Learning and Life Design offices on the Homewood Campus at Johns Hopkins University in order to create and execute innovative, highly experiential, and scalable programs and interventions that develop 21st-century skills and empower students and alumni to be inspired and make life-changing audacious moves.

The incumbent is expected to consistently deliver exceptional customer service to staff, visitors, and students, represent Integrative Learning and Life Design, and highlight the division's impactful work.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities


Event Planning and Coordination (40%)

  • Primary point of contact and lead organizer for virtual and in-person events for the Life Design Lab. Develops scaled interventions to empower stakeholders as they conceive and execute their events.
  • Supervise task coordination and assist with managing cross-functional teams for large-scale flagship events within the LDL portfolio, including the Future Fest, career fairs, Employer Treks, and Industry Weeks.
  • Provide support for the implementation and execution of Life Design student treks, including travel, hotel accommodations, and catering.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Employer Engagement and the Communications Specialist to support employer and alumni planning and communications for major events.
  • Manage LDL events budgets in coordination with the Life Design Lab Budget Analyst and, where necessary, ILLD Departmental Principals.
  • Foster positive relationships with operational partners in Facilities and Real Estate, Scheduling, and Events Services, Homewood Student Affairs, and similar partners on other Johns Hopkins University campuses as needed.


Imagine Center Facilities Management (40%)

  • Serve as the main point of contact for facilities needs within the Imagine Center for the seven office directors in the building.
  • Manage the logistical and operational needs within the building regarding supplies, technology, and scheduling procedures.
  • Support staff of student workers and front desk security personnel in their administrative functions and ensure the security of the Imagine Center.
  • Oversees the processes and procedures for reserving and utilizing designated meeting rooms and spaces within the building.
  • Participate in regular strategic meetings with stakeholders from all offices in the building to continuously identify needs, challenges, and opportunities to evolve best practices and procedures within the space.


Divisional Coordination (10%)

  • Leverage Handshake, Microsoft Office Suite, and social media (Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn, in particular) to organize and advertise virtual and in-person events and collaborate with the Manager of Systems and Digital Experience to explore platforms that enable the development of new, scalable interventions across all ILLD offices.
  • Work closely with the Director of Operations for LDL and the Director of Operations for ILLD and maintain regular communications with leaders of key offices, including the Life Design Lab, the Hopkins Office of Undergraduate Research, University Experiential Learning, Global Education, Hire Hopkins, Doctorial Life Design Studio, Hopkins Connect, and Divisional Staff.
  • Provide support to the Life Design Lab Leadership Team and the ILLD Leadership team to develop strategic priorities for ILLD and the LDL.


Other Duties as Assigned (10%)

  • Actively foster relationships and develop projects in the Johns Hopkins and regional community that elevate the visibility and strengthen the Integrative Learning and Life Design brand.
  • Pursue professional development, research, and learning in design thinking, leadership & management, diversity equity and inclusion, entrepreneurship, and communications that allow the direct engagement with and education of ILLD stakeholders.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated successful experience in managing space reservations in an academic setting.
  • Knowledge of human-centered design thinking processes and tools and familiarity with life design philosophy and methodology.
  • Experience with strategic planning and managing teams.
  • Able to demonstrate examples of entrepreneurial spirit and the creation of successful academic ventures or innovative programs.
  • Experience supervising, mentoring, and managing student workers or teaching in a university or college setting.
  • Experience managing facilities, particularly in a student-facing space within higher education.
  • Demonstrated expertise and success in planning and executing large-scale, complex events with multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with stakeholders at multiple levels of the university.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with multiple software systems and applications, including CRMs, database systems, survey applications, social media, Microsoft PowerPoint, Teams, Word, and Excel, reservation or ticketing systems, and/or workflow tracking systems.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Five years progressively responsible in a supervisory/leadership, operational management, crisis management, or facilities role.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree and 7 years of experience in higher education.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
