Associate Director of Marketing

The Associate Director of Marketing in the Office of Annual Giving (OAG) at Johns Hopkins University reports to the Marketing & Content Manager.


This role is a member of the Marketing team, and in close partnership with the Marketing & Content Manager, it will manage the creation, implementation, and tracking of multi-channel direct marketing and stewardship campaigns (including direct mail, digital, and other channels) targeting a variety of constituents, including alumni, parents, students, and friends of the university. These campaigns aim to increase alumni donor counts and pipelines, raise reliable and habitual revenue, broaden the base of constituent engagement, and improve donor retention. This role will also have the opportunity to expand our digital footprint, including the use of paid social advertising, digital ads, and earned and paid media.


The Office of Annual Giving is a growing team that currently consists of 20 colleagues who provide annual giving services to the nine schools of the university, various departments of Johns Hopkins Medicine, and several centers and institutes, totaling nearly 40 partners. These annual giving services include developing comprehensive and integrated direct-response solicitation strategies that are optimal for each unit.


Specific duties & responsibilities

  • In close partnership with the Marketing Manager, assist with the message creation, production calendar, testing of messaging, campaign execution, results analysis, and reporting for nearly 40 units.
  • In close partnership with the Marketing Manager, execute digital and print marketing campaigns for annual giving appeals, with an emphasis on personalization and scalable segmentation in both the direct appeals and the giving experience.
  • Expand the current OAG digital solicitation and stewardship footprint that will allow OAG and Johns Hopkins Development & Alumni Relations to be better positioned to meet current and future fundraising goals in a growing mobile/digital society.
  • Participate in short and long-term strategic planning for the Office of Annual Giving providing analysis of data for trends, areas to improve, and resources related to the direct appeal program.
  • Utilize reports, data pulls, spreadsheets, and other database tools to track the overall ROI of OAG’s appeal efforts.
  • Expand the current OAG digital/social advertising footprint.
  • Conduct research on best-in-class marketing programs across sectors and make recommendations to further align OAG strategies with industry best practices.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Marketing & Content Manager.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related field.
  • Four years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Preferred experience in marketing and communications, or development and alumni relations.
  • Experience developing and deploying web, social, email, and print content.
  • Experience with website development and maintenance, information architecture, email service providers, content management systems, and HTML.
  • Working knowledge of paid social media and Google analytics.
  • Comfortable working in a complex, multi-divisional, results-oriented, fast environment.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, establish priorities, set objectives, and achieve goals.
  • Strong organizational skills and sound judgment around prioritizing many and sometimes competing for obligations.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to listen and respond appropriately to donor and staff inquiries and concerns
  • Excellent computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), experience using Salesforce or a similar database, experience using Salesforce Marketing Cloud or a similar email service provider, and ability to learn new technologies as needed.
  • Ability to work independently as well as on a team.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
