Associate Director of Research & Special Initiatives

General Nature or Purpose of the Job:

The Associate Director of Research & Special Initiatives (AD-RSI) is responsible for managing a research laboratory in cognitive psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and education.  Specifically, this role will lead the research, evaluation, and development of exisiting and new CTY programs and projects   The AD-RSI will lead a collaborative research team in conducting evidence based research inclusive of various assessments aimed to assess the potential and abilities of gifted and talented youth in urban school systems with specific attention to Baltimore and underserved populations.  Interest and ability to contribute to the development of new projects and passion for improving the experience of gifted and talented youth in underserved communities is essential.  This role will provide management to a team of casual part-time staff and as well as administrative support staff to facilitate data collection, analysis, interpretation, dissemination and program outcomes.    



  • Manage the administrative and scientific implementation of research protocol for CTY research studies.  
  • Will collaborate with faculty, develop protocols, SOPs and supervise study related activities.  
  • Supervise staff in the CTY lab as well provide supervision and direction to part-time casual lab staff.
  • Responsible for the oversight of all aspects of the research project including regulatory submissions and other compliance requirements (IRB submissions, etc.)
  • Develop and oversee an accurate, current and secure database. 
  • Oversee training and supervision of staff and/or students for data collection and fieldwork activities and provide general management support.
  • Determine project priorities and take initiative to exercise independent judgement to resolve issues.
  • Participate in research presentations, draft and edit research reports and manuscripts for scientific peer review publication.    
  • Participate in meetings with local schools and other community based organizations including providing key information to stakeholders (educators, parents, district representatives).  
  • Lead efforts to provide training to educators in partnering programs consistent with defined research protocols, etc.
  • Manage and update a literature review on gifted education in urban school systems with a focus on underserved populations.
  • Identify and build relationships with faculty and staff at CTY, JHU, and within Baltimore schools who are working on similar or related projects.
  • Project management. (Monitoring progress, scheduling of work and meetings, documenting the project's development, etc.)

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree in Cognitive Psychology, Neuroscience, Psychology or related discipline strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of five years related research experience.  
  • Demonstrated ability to appropriately obtain, present and report evidence based outcomes.
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods preferred. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work with a wide variety of audiences including minors.
  • Experience presenting to multiple audiences with ability to synthesize and interpret narrative and numerical data.
  • Excellent written communication.  
  • Experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Some experience working in an academic setting is preferred.


JHU Equivalency formula: 30 undergraduate credits or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.


Required Special Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to read, understand, and synthesize research.
  • Ability to effectively manage complex projects and coordinate large groups.
  • Some knowledge of gifted education, educational challenges for underserved populations, and Baltimore K-12 education desirable.
  • Grantsmanship and presentation skills also desired.


Internal and External Contacts:

  • The successful candidate will be required to work with members of the CTY staff and JHU faculty and staff throughout the university working on related projects and issues. There will also be extensive contact with the Baltimore school community including students, parents, teachers, and administrators from the individual school level up through and including system-wide offices.


Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certification:

  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office and familiarity with statistical software (e.g., SPSS, SAS, or R).


Physical Requirements for the Job:

  • Ability to access and transmit information using a computer; dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse pad and other office machinery.
  • The incumbent will be required to communicate regularly via telephone, email; must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings.
  • Position also requires a degree of mobility common to working in an office environment; bending, kneeling or standing during events and presentations may be required.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Supervision of CTY Lab Coordinator as well provide supervision and direction to part-time casual lab staff.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
