Baltimore Emerging Scholars Instructor

General Summary/Purpose:

Teach the CTY Baltimore Emerging Scholars 5th grade A Connected World curriculum before or after regular school hours.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Teach A Connected World curriculum for 5th graders developed by CTY.
  • Monitor student performance and progress.
  • Differentiate instruction for individual students as appropriate.
  • Provide regular feedback to CTY supervisor on how students are doing. Evaluate the curriculum’s effectiveness and assist in refining the curriculum after students complete the course.
  • Practice positive and effective classroom management.
  • Handle student conduct issues according to protocols.
  • Communicate with students, parents, host school administrators and supervisor to resolve any issues with students or the course/program implementation.
  • Cooperate with and help facilitate CTY research efforts related to CTY Emerging Scholars (e.g. administration of tests, surveys, interviews, etc.) 
  • Supervise and mentor a classroom assistant, if one is assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with significant coursework in astronomy, astrophysics or a related field.
  • Two years of teaching experience.

 
Preferred Requirements:

  • Graduate work and Education courses preferred.
  • Experience teaching the age group is preferred.
     

Required Special Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to teach using engaging, student-centered methods. Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, especially those from urban populations.

 

Internal and External Contacts Required as Part of the Job:

  • Regular contact with the CTY Baltimore Emerging Scholars co-directors, the assistant teacher at the school, and students and their families.

 

Physical Requirements for the Job:

  • The person in this position needs to be able to travel to schools offering the program in Baltimore City and be able to move around a school building to access the assigned room.
  • This position constantly communicates with students during lessons and frequently with parents, supervisors and other adults about student progress and any concerns.
  • A significant portion of the curriculum is hands-on activities, meaning the candidate should have fine motor skills to model expectations to students.
  • The person must be able to exchange information in all situations accurately and tactfully.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
