Biofabrication Specialist

The laboratory of Yun Chen (Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering) is seeking a highly motivated Biofabrication Specialist to help manage daily operations and support research in biofabrication and characterization of biofabricated samples for clinical applications.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • The Mechanical Engineering of Wet-materials (MEOW) Lab led by Dr. Yun Chen wishes to recruit qualified individuals to support our group’s research.
  • Direction of research projects under the general supervision of the faculty investigator and senior lab members.
  • Protocol development and assay design.
  • Critical analysis of data.
  • Generating codes for data processing and analysis.
  • Identification and troubleshooting of situations requiring special attention.
  • Weekly presentation of results.
  • Design of figures and preparation of text for reports and publications.


The work will involve a wide range of techniques including

  • Matlab programming and python programming.
  • Immunofluorescence.
  • Spatial transcriptomics.
  • Operating optical microscopes for large-scaled, high-resolution, multispectral image acquisition.
  • Culture of primary cells and established cell lines.
  • Bioprinting.
  • CAD-based design.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Proficient in best lab practices.
  • Exhibits strong communication and management skills.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work independently.
  • Many department laboratories operate 24/7 with schedules on day, evening, or night shift. Rotating schedules may include weekend work and holiday assignments as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Biology, or related field.



Preferred Qualifications
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience is preferred.
  • Relevant research experience in bioprinting, molecular and cell biology, mechanical engineering, and biophysics is preferred.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.
