General summary/purpose:


The North American AIDS Cohort Collaboration on Research and Design (NA-ACCORD) study team is looking for a Biostatistician to help us produce rigorous, relevant scientific results as directed by the research aims of our projects. The NA-ACCORD is the largest collaboration of adults living with HIV in the US and Canada, and the study is currently in its 13th year. Observational, longitudinal, individual-level data are pooled using a collaborative study design across >20 interval and clinical cohort studies of adults living with HIV in the US and Canada (www.naaccord.org).

The Biostatistician will join a team of data managers, computer programmers, other biostatisticians, and epidemiologists who use data to help execute the study aims and hypotheses. Experience with observational (as opposed to clinical trials), longitudinal data is preferred, including survival analysis. The successful applicant will provide critical analytic rigor to answering the scientific questions of interest. Interest or experience in machine learning techniques is advantageous, as are programming skills in R and R Markdown. Collaboration with others on the team, including data managers, biostatisticians, and scientific investigators is critical for this position.



Specific duties & responsibilities:


The primary duties and responsibilities include performing data analysis, including the data management needed to translate the specified study design into an analytic-ready data set and analysis using a broad range of methods. This includes both cross sectional and longitudinal analyses (Kaplan Meier, discrete and continuous time-to-event survival analysis, incidence rate estimation and Poisson regression) using complex, longitudinal data from two different types of longitudinal cohort studies (i.e. interval and clinical cohort studies). The position offers opportunities to present results and co-author peer-reviewed publications, which necessitates excellent oral and written communication skills.


The position requires the individual to be self-motivated, self-directed, efficient, and responsible for multiple analytic projects simultaneously.


Applicant must be willing to work collaboratively with the NA-ACCORD Epidemiology/Biostatistics Core (EBC) study team in consultation with investigators at the contributing cohorts, as well as external scientific investigators, on:



  • Formation of study designs specific to the study objective
  • Drafting statistical analysis plans
  • Translating the specified study design into an analytic-ready data set, including analysis of cohort-level data to ensure proper participant selection
  • Analysis of individual-level data to answer the scientific question of interest
  • Identify potential problems with study data and collaborate with the data managers to resolve issues encountered
  • Preparing data tables and figures for publications and presentations at scientific meetings
  • Contribute to technical/scientific writing and reviewing drafts of reports, posters, and manuscripts, including writing up interpretation of analysis results and description of statistical methods used
  • Documenting decision making during the conduct of studies and archiving code for the purposes of reproducing research findings
  • Navigating shared files and contributing to shared files to create a transparent research workspace
  • Attend staff meetings and provide updates on status of projects


Minimum qualifications (mandatory):


  • Master's degree in biostatistics, epidemiology, or related quantitative field.
  • 1 year related experience.
  • Mastery of SAS and/or R
  • Demonstrated ability on significant graduate project or additional doctoral education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Although not required, the following skills and knowledge are preferred:

  • Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) proficiency.
  • Experience performing longitudinal data analysis and survival analysis.
  • Good problem-solving skills, including organizing and investigating possible solutions and presenting them to the team for discussion.
  • Good organizational, written and verbal communication skills in the preparation and presentation of results.
  • Good interpersonal skills in dealing with investigators and a team-oriented approach with other staff members and investigators.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
