The primary duties and responsibilities of the job:


The Biostatistician will perform cutting edge research in HIV treatment and prevention. The Biostatistician plays an integral role in a large, multidisciplinary team of investigators from the Department of Medicine in the School of Medicine and Departments of Epidemiology in the School of Public Health focused on research in HIV treatment prevention, using cohort and clinical trial data.


The Biostatistician will work with the team to formulate statistical designs for studies, draft statistical analysis plans, and interface with database designers to ensure that the data collected can support the statistical analysis plan. Work will involve developing statistical reports for quality assurance (recruitment, data quantity, data quality), generating confidential statistical reports for data monitoring committees, preparing data tables for publications and presentations at scientific meetings, and writing up the study results and statistical methods. Compliance with procedures in accordance with reproducible research is required.


Depending on the particular protocol and analysis, will have some or all of these duties and responsibilities:


  • Lead the development and implementation of bio statistical data analyses plans, including generation of analysis data sets and design and generation of tables and figures reporting analysis results;
  • Prepare data for inclusion in various analyses: e.g., descriptive, graphical presentations, regression, longitudinal data analysis and non-parametric analysis
  • Contribute to writing and reviewing drafts of reports, posters, and manuscripts, including writing up interpretation of analysis results and description of statistical methods used;
  • Create and maintain documentation of statistical methods and programming code;
  • Create analysis datasets for scientific manuscripts and presentations and public use databases, including associated data dictionaries;
  • Implement quality assurance and secure data management processes.
  • Identify potential problems with study data and collaborate with research team to resolve issues encountered;
  • Export and merge large datasets from multiple sources (e.g.,  electronic health records, laboratory data, pharmacy data.) and write and run code (ideally in SAS and Stata, R, or comparable);
  • Assist in preparing materials for and participate in investigators' meetings, staff meetings, etc.
  • Complete other as-needed data programming and analysis
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Attend staff meetings and provide updates on status of reports, papers, and other work responsibilities


Minimum requirements


  • Master’s degree in biostatistics, epidemiology or other related quantitative field.
  • 1 year of related experience in a work or academic setting or demonstrated ability on significant graduate school project.
  • Demonstrated ability on significant graduate project or additional doctoral education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred requirements:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience preferred. Ph.D. helpful.
  • Experience with machine learning (e.g., neural networks, random forest, boosted regression trees, etc.) and/or “big data” would be considered a plus.
  •   Experience performing bio statistical analyses, including categorical, longitudinal and survival data; SAS, STATA, and/or R programming; technical/scientific writing for medical publications to describe results and statistical methods.


Special Skills and Knowledge:


  • Ability to work independently and use reference manuals to develop proficiency with software or computer systems
  • Good organizational, written and verbal communication skills in the preparation and presentation of results


Good interpersonal skills in dealing with investigators and a “team-oriented” approach with other staff members



Ability to be primarily independent once oriented and knowledgeable about the analytical goals of the study. Expected to work collaboratively.


Collaborate with other JHU staff and faculty; collaborates with study investigators at other institutions across the United States including NIH, public health departments, and etc.

Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
