Biostatistician

The Dana Center for Preventive Ophthalmology is seeking to hire a Biostatistician  to contribute to vision research. The Biostatistician will form collaborations with clinicians, researchers, and study teams through collaborating in projects at the Wilmer Biostatistics Center. They will provide expertise and advice on study design, data collection and management, and method of data analysis, in collaboration with the researchers, analyze and display study data, and facilitatei interpretation of analyses. Also, the biostatistician will provide written descriptions of data analysis and satistical methods for protocols, funding applications, and manuscripts.

 

The Biostatistician also will play a key role in the Coordinating Center for international multicenter ophthalmological clinical trials. Demonstrated interest in research and furthering medical knowledge is required. This individual will have ample opportunity to acquire knowledge and experience with source and analysis of data in ophthalmology, public health and preventive medicine and opportunities to contribute to scientific publications as a collaborating or lead author. This role also will be encouraged to participate in methodological research with mentorship from Dana Center’s senior biostatistician. 

 

The Dana Center for Preventive Ophthalmology at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute is a leader in global and domestic research on blindness prevention and the only World Health Organization collaborating center in the United States. The Wilmer Biostatistics Center, directed by the Dana Center faculty, is one of the five resource cores funded by a National Eye Institute’s P30 center grant to Wilmer. The Wilmer Biostatistics Center is comprised of experienced statisticians and data managers and provides statistical support to the Wilmer community. The clinical trial coordinating center also led by the Dana Center faculty collaborates closely with clinician scientists and contributes to scientific and administrative leadership in clinical studies in ophthalmology.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide biostatistical consultation to Wilmer researchers to assist with study design, data collection and management, statistical methodology selection, data analyses, and data interpretation.
  • Estimate sample size or power and assist in writing methods sections of research proposals, grant applications, and publications.
  • Perform data analyses using basic and advanced statistical tools.

  • Display data in graphs, figures and tables.

  • Interpret and report findings from statistical analyses.

  • Note areas in which current statistical software or methods are unsatisfactory and discuss shortcomings with the Senior Statistician.

 

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • Master's level degree in biostatistics, epidemiology, or related quantitative field.
  • 1 year related experience.
  • Demonstrated ability on significant graduate project or additional doctoral education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Good oral and written communication ability.
  • Ability to interact with trainees and faculty members from diverse backgrounds.

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • One or more years of collaborative biomedical or public health research experience

 

 

 JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. 

 

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and proficiency in Stata, SAS, or R (proficiency with multiple statistical programs preferred).
  • Experience with data collection and management.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Good time management skills to manage multiple projects efficiently.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Strong self-motivation.

Starting Salary Range: $52,495 - $72,210 annually (commensurate with experience)

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
