Business Development Associate


General Summary/Purpose:

This position reports to the Sr. Director, Corporate Partnerships within Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV). In this role, the Business Development Associate supports industry alliance management and partnering efforts for the JHTV Corporate Partnerships team.  Responsibilities include managing the relationships and contractual obligations between the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and third party partners that arise from strategically important research collaborations.  The alliance management process is initiated immediately after a deal or collaboration is signed, and it is the Business Development Associate’s job to support the translation of complex scientific, operational and financial terms, conditions and obligations into manageable activities and milestones to facilitate contract compliance and the advancement of new technologies.  The Business Development Associate will work closely with external partners, inventors, and internal groups to coordinate post-deal compliance and research obligations.  The Business Development Associate will create and maintain complex project plans and project activities, coordinate alliance team meetings, and prepare annual reports.
The Business Development Associate is a positive, energetic, self-starter that develops strong relationships and networks, influences decisions and thinks strategically about JHU assets.  S/he is also a strong verbal and written communicator, and can juggle many diverse and (sometimes) competing scientific and business situations to ensure successful, long-term partnerships between JHU and other organizations.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supports management of large scale industry collaborations and agreements including overseeing deliverables and maintaining partnerships.
  • Coordinates matters relating to managed collaborations including scheduling and managing committee meetings, ensuring compliance with all aspects of the alliance agreements, and overseeing the completion of any required third party agreements to support the research.
  • Tracks administrative matters relating to the RFPs for projects and research programs, once launched.
  • Sources faculty, technologies and research programs to be presented as potential research projects for industry collaborations.
  • Supports complex intellectual property and technology transfer tasks including developing programming for business development events and organizing visits by industry partners and venture capitalists.
  • Identifies companies with potential interest in JHTV’s technology pipeline and performs research to identify the individuals in each company to whom marketing materials should be sent.
  • Maintains records of industry engagement in customer relational database and proactively markets inventions to appropriate contacts.


Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in life or physical sciences required.
  • Two years of business development, alliance management and/or project management experience is strongly preferred.


Preferred Qualifications:
PhD in life or physical sciences or a MBA with an undergraduate/Master’s degree in life or physical sciences strongly preferred. Other advanced degrees or combinations with directly related industry experience will also be considered.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident required due to Federal Export Controls
  • Ability to make independent judgments and act on decisions on a daily basis and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service within the functional area.
  • Ability to work with flexibility on several tasks simultaneously and to meet various concurrent deadlines.
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with Salesforce preferable.
  • Experience with various software applications (e.g. spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical and graphic packages), to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.
  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of industry and University employees.
  • Highly organized, resourceful, and detail oriented.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
