Business Intelligence Data Analyst

IT@JH Enterprise Business Solutions is seeking a Business Intelligence Analyst II who will be responsible for the planning, development, and maintenance of reports for clients of the Enterprise Business Solutions (EBS) Analytics group using industry standard tooling such as Microsoft SQL Server, Power BI, Snowflake, and Tableau. This role reports to the IT Manager of the EBS Analytics group and will work with that individual to take ownership of certain projects within the team’s portfolio.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • This role is directly client facing and will take on a lead role with new projects including gathering requirements, attending/leading regular meetings with clients, managing internal team resources, and acting as a point of contact for the project team.
  • Interfaces with project leaders/sponsors, Divisional and Enterprise leadership, and representatives of the Johns Hopkins Data Trust.
  • Reports to the IT Manager of the EBS Analytics group and will meet regularly with that individual to set high-level objectives and ensure alignment with Departmental goals.
  • Responsible for independent organization of individual and project priorities in alignment with those high-level objectives.
  • Work in this role will vary by project but includes supporting existing reports by providing quality of life updates and bug fixes, migrating reports from legacy tooling, developing new reporting in tools such as Power BI under the guidance of a project manager, responding to ad-hoc data requests from clients, creating and maintaining SQL queries and reporting views, and working directly with clients on all aspects of their assigned projects.


Specific Devices, Software, Projects

  • Primary software used includes SQL Server, Snowflake, Tableau, and Power BI. Occasionally other tools such as Azure, Azure Data Factory, Fabric, and Python are used as well.
  • All work is done in the Microsoft Windows ecosystem.


Scale/size of Area, Project and/or System Supported

  • Projects supported have varied user bases ranging from 10 users to thousands.
  • Clients supported by the EBS Analytics group include all divisions of the Enterprise that have an active contract and can include small research teams, executive leadership, and enterprise-wide tooling. As such, this role is required to have the ability to handle complex tasks involving many stakeholders and disparate data feeds, as well as flexibility and proficiency in a multitude of subject matter areas covering medical, financial, and operational domains.
  • High adaptability and strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills are required.


Work Location

  • Remote, United States. Proximity to Baltimore is preferred.

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to derive insights from data driven by nuanced business requirements.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • High level of accuracy and thoroughness in data analysis and reporting.


Technical qualifications or specialized certifications

  • Proficiency with data querying & analysis tools such as SQL, Python, or R
  •  Familiarity with Data Privacy Regulations (e.g., HIPPA)


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience, including two years involved in collecting and analyzing data, preparing reports, identifying, solving problems, and delivering actionable insights.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with basic UI/UX principles.
  • Proficiency in SQL and data modeling.
  • Should be able to write and document complex SQL queries.
  • Should be able to write and modify Views.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional experience may substitute for education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with industry standard BI tools such as Power BI or Tableau.
  • Relevant industry-standard Certifications preferred.
  • Advanced SQL and data modeling knowledge in addition to the above minimum qualifications.
  • Should be comfortable with Window Functions, Sub-Selects, CTEs.
  • Should understand performance impacts of different code solutions.
  • Should be able to assess code performance and optimize existing queries.
  • Be able to digest complex business requirements into clear goals and objectives.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
