Business Services Analyst

We are seeking a Business Service Analyst to be primarily responsible for clinical, educational, and research analytics which include tracking, analyzing, and reporting quality, cost, and clinical outcomes data related to quality, safety, value and operational performance improvement projects within the Department of Pediatrics. This position reports directly to the Chief Medical Informatics Officer and works under the supervision of a Data Trust Analytic Team Leader or other data governance or analytic leadership appropriate for the scope of work. This supervision may be through a matrixed or direct reporting structure. The position would also collaborate closely with the clinical providers throughout the Department of Pediatrics to develop a thorough understanding of their programs and assist them in meeting their program goals.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for data analytics and additional support of performance measures, ongoing measurement, data collection, reporting, data visualizations and information dissemination.
  • Ensures that the use of business intelligence applications enhances business decision making capabilities.
  • Conducts data exploration using various complex business intelligence tools, which requires understanding of relational database structures and data warehouse concepts.
  • Collaborates with other analytic teams and central engineering team as directed.
  • Collecting and analyzing business requirements for new projects.
  • Extracting both clinical data from existing information systems (e.g. Epic).
  • Developing methodologies to track new relevant clinical data (e.g. adherence to clinical pathways and matching those cases with outcomes data in order to support continuous improvement of the care delivered).
  • Developing clinical performance reports and reporting platforms to increase transparency and information flow among providers, administrators, and other management, and providing other necessary analytical support to clinicians and management in order to improve the quality and consistency of the care provided within the Department of Pediatrics.
  • Transforms complex information into simple and effective communications targeted to organization leaders and colleagues.
  • Assists in providing direction and feedback to ensure database designs/queries result in accurate information and reporting.
  • Provides integrated analytical solutions across customers and channels, contributing to analytic action plans.
  • Creates dashboards which visually display various business intelligence queries.
  • Writes code, alters existing code, analyzes existing systems, and explores new systems to ensure adequate tracking is consistently available for reports to leadership and executive team.
  • Enhances professional growth to remain current on market trends, emerging analytic solutions, and advances in informatics.
  • Work on low and medium-level complexity projects independently, and seek guidance, as appropriate, on highly complex tasks.
  • Candidate should have high analytical ability to solve complex problems and be a self-starter, able to work independently with staff at various levels of the organization.
  • Collaborate with data engineers to request ETLs from clarity to data warehouse based on project needs.
  • Stay in compliance with HIPPA


Special Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Must possess an understanding of clinical analyst processes, including requirements elicitation, documentation and testing processes.
  • Requires knowledge of health care and hospital clinical operations and the interrelationship of clinical process and Information Systems applications.
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge and experience using relational databases and coordinating various computer/database platforms.
  • Knowledge of project and information management.
  • Proficiency in SQL programming, BI platforms (Tableau/Power BI/others), Excel and other office suite applications.
  • Must possess an understanding of clinical analyst processes, including requirements elicitation, documentation and testing processes.
  • Requires knowledge of health care and hospital clinical operations and the interrelationship of clinical process and Information Systems applications.
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge and experience using relational databases and coordinating various computer/database platforms.
  • Comprehensive understanding of data warehouse concepts.
  • Able to develop and design statistical reports using multiple databases and data management systems.
  • Knowledge of medical coding systems (i.e. ICD10, CPT) is desirable.
  • Ability to distill and articulate technical and organizational approach to clinical data needs.
  • Knowledge of ETL
  • Proficient in data cleansing.


Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications

  • SQL experience to create queries and stored procedures is strongly preferred. EPIC Clarity training and experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with SQL programming, Tableau and the following Microsoft applications: Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Internet Explorer.
  • EDW internal certification required within 6 months for positions working with patient-related data.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Healthcare, Business or a related field. Master's Degree preferred.
  • Three years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
