Business Solution Analyst

IT@JH Office of the Deputy CIO is seeking a Business Solution Analyst with a strong background defining and documenting requirements from a diverse set of functional and technical users. The ideal candidate should have experience translating user requirements into technical specifications for data engineers and business intelligence developers, and appreciation for enterprise data architecture. The ideal candidate should have very strong communication skills, with a strong commitment to data quality and excellent customer service skills.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Builds customer relationships - Collaborate with customers to understand their business processes, identify business objectives, manage scope, and recommend solutions based on your expertise with business intelligence tools and modern data solutions.
  • Gathers requirements - Collaborate with business owners to understand their business requirements. Work with business owners to identify critical performance metrics and end-product acceptance criteria.
  • Contributes to overall project management, tracking and status reporting for internal team and customer.
  • Facilitates communication among customers, developers and engineers on design and approach to translate business requirements into technical specifications.
  • Serves as the key liaison between business users and data engineers and developers to communicate project expectations from a business perspective aka act as a “product owner”.
  • Develops dashboards and data models in Power BI.
  • Develops, documents, and performs unit, integration and quality assurance testing for datasets and reports. Facilitate and help document business users’ acceptance testing.
  • Plans and rolls-out solutions - Coordinate with software engineers, customers, and others to plan, support, and document production releases.
  • Helps create or support creation of user guides and other job aids.
  • Develops and maintains production support documentation.
  • Provides production support and assist in maintenance activities.
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently and in a team setting with team members from different departments and with different technical expertise.


Specific Devices, Software, Projects

  • Creates and maintain data models, data products, reports, & dashboards.
  • Supports university-wide and Divisional customers with diverse functions spanning the entire student lifecycle including but not limited to: Admissions, Enrollment Management, Student Affairs, Career Services, etc.
  • Familiar with university-wide systems and processes including but not limited to: SIS, PFCanvas.
  • Prepared to use tools like: Excel, Power BI, SQL, Tableau, & GIT.


Scale/Size of Area, Project and/or System Supported

  • The University Data team serves thousands of users across all University functions. Integrate data from dozens of enterprises, divisional and local sources.


On-Call Requirements

  • Very rarely and if needed would typically be scheduled far in advance (e.g., technical upgrades and migrations).

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Four years related experience years of experience gathering requirements, testing and delivering solutions to satisfy a wide variety of customers.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and explain complex business and technical concepts to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Experience developing and delivering reports and dashboards in Power BI and/or Tableau.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM-related field.
  • Prior experience and understanding of student systems and data.
  • Requirements gathering and testing specifically for well-adopted reporting, business intelligence and analytic solutions (visualizations, KPIs, trending).
  • Experience with SQL, ideally MS-SQL.
  • Experience with dimensional and other data modeling and information architectures, relative data warehouse and lakehouse platforms like MS-Fabric.
  • Knowledge of or experience working in an agile development environment, including Atlassian tools.
  • Proficiency and aptitude in statistics and data analysis.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
