CO Clinical Nurse

General summary/purpose:

Working in the Division of Cardiology this position supports Cardiologists with their outpatient clinical duties at Johns Hopkins Green Spring Station. The incumbent is accountable for the delivery of comprehensive care in collaboration with the provider and other members of the health care team to the client population through assessment planning intervention and evaluation; this role helps foster an environment that optimizes client well-being and outcomes.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Reviews physician EPIC-in-baskets on a daily basis triaging appropriately.
  • Pends new medications and prescription refills in Epic for physician signature.
  • Assists with ordering patient lab and study tests as needed and routing orders in EPIC to physicians for their co-signature.
  • Works with cardiology scheduling team to help schedule tests as needed.
  • Assists in completion of prior authorizations.
  • Follows up on lab and study test results notifying the physician and patient as appropriate.
  • Returns patient phone calls and responds to appropriate Epic in-basket questions.
  • Prepares physicians for outpatient clinic appointments including obtaining detailed medical records for patients with complex medical histories and ensuring records are scanned into Epic.
  • Populates patient history in EPIC prior to appointments.
  • Generates patient problem lists as requested by physicians.
  • Is aware of the inclusion/exclusion criteria for ongoing clinical trials to help identify possible research candidates.
  • In some circumstances the RN will also attend clinic with physicians obtain/update history and interim concerns from patients and help document patient clinic encounters in EPIC.
  • Practices nursing per clinical protocols and under the nursing scope of practice for the State of Maryland.
  • May perform case management services to patients from initial intake visit through termination of services.
  • Assists in the development/updating of unit based protocols standardized care maps and/or care plans.

  • Uses own judgment in achieving goals of good clinic practices good documentation and interactions with staff and health care professionals.

  • Has excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Must have the ability to inter act with individuals at a variety of ages and levels.

Specific physical requirements for the job:

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to reach for push pull and/or lift patients and equipment with little likelihood of injury.
  • Ability to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Finger dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm for example using a keyboard.
  • Ability to see within normal parameters to hear within normal ranges and ability to move about.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Individual must be a registered nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland or state where practicing. Bachelor's degree in nursing or related discipline preferred.
  • Current CPR certification required. If not certified currently will need to complete certification within sixty (60) days of hire.

  • Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

    • Ability to analyze data to synthesize and summarize information and to make judgments regarding patient care.
    • Ability to use a computer keyboard to input and obtain data.
    • Ability to apply principles of evidenced-based practice scientific process and service excellence in practice.
