CO Nurse Practitioner

The Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology seeks a Nurse Practitioner.   The Advanced Provider Practitioner (APP) supports the Johns Hopkins Sleep Disorders Center at both Johns Hopkins East Baltimore and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center campuses.


The APP works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team of Sleep physicians from subspecialties including pulmonary, neurology, psychiatry, and psychology both attendings and residents/fellows that delivers care to patients with a wide range of sleep disorders. The APP will also partner sleep technologists and respiratory therapists to optimize team performance and outcomes for patients. The APP will see patients initially with supervision and once competencies demonstrated will practice independently in partnership with the physician faculty.


The duties include a comprehensive set of activities including: 1) evaluating and treating new and established patients by taking a sleep-related history and physical and placing sleep-related testing as needed, 2) triaging of patients for clinic visits with the appropriate sleep medicine specialist and sleep testing, 3) patient and family education regarding the nature of their sleep-related medical problems, prognoses, and options for continued care concerning care continuity, 4) providing clinical support for prescription authorization and patient follow-up for the practice, 5) developing materials for patient education, 6) act as liaison between referring physicians and the practice and between hospital staff, including nurses, physicians and other departments, sleep fellows and the sleep medicine program; 7) assisting with research recruitment when possible; and 8) supporting inpatient evaluation of patients undergoing sleep testing. The APP practices within the guidelines of the Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, and the institution in accordance with the clinical purview required and approved by the State of Maryland. 


Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct health interviews and physical exams, assigns a sleep disorder-related diagnosis (e.g. sleep disordered breathing, restless legs syndrome, parasomnias, circadian rhythm disorders, insomnias, and hypersomnia’s).
  • Orders diagnostic tests (e.g. home sleep studies, overnight sleep studies, positive airway pressure titration studies, EKGs, PFTs, sleep studies, and lab values), provides consultations, counseling and teaching to patients, families, and other health care professionals; initiates referrals to other providers for concurrent and continuing care, manages clinical emergencies should they arise, mobilizes resources, and makes appropriate short and long terms referrals.
  • Develops appropriate treatment plans for the management of patients with sleep disorders including patient education and the judicious prescription of non-controlled and controlled drugs as appropriate.
  • Assists with patient triage from available Epic work queues for sleep lab or clinic evaluations with the appropriate sleep medicine sub-specialist.
  • Update and create new patient education materials to be used in the Sleep Disorders Center. Assist with a patient support group if one is developed.
  • Work closely with other division staff including administrative personnel, sleep technologists, and respiratory therapists to coordinate other aspects of patient care such as scheduling of clinic appointments, scheduling of necessary testing, trouble-shooting CPAP problems and answering patient questions.
  • Provide clinical support as needed for prescription authorizations, response to patient phone calls, and other documents that need signing/attention by providers in the practice.
  • Develop and improve sleep center under the supervision of the Clinical Director, clinical and managerial operations that include but are not limited to:  improving clinic flow, marketing of the sleep center, developing and improving upon clinical services.


General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Uses advanced clinical and theoretical knowledge to identify acute and/or chronic health problems through a comprehensive, age-appropriate assessment of patients/families.
  • Provides evidence-based care and provides patient education for self-care chronic disease management. 
  • Effectively uses resources. Prioritizes and organizes work to meet the changing priorities of the functional unit and/or cost center.
  • Authority for coordinating and making decisions regarding patient care.
  • Triages phone calls and electronic advice requests from patients and determines need for medical assessment. Assesses lab results and implements intervention in consultation with primary providers and medical director. Provides guidance and direction to other unit staff where applicable to promote quality, safety, and excellence in care.
  • Analyzes findings and applies, as appropriate, to improve the management of patient care. 
  • Identifies care continuity needs of patients.
  • Participates in quality improvement/patient safety projects.
  • Coordinates care for a group of primary complex patients to achieve clinical and organizational outcomes.

Responsible for other clinical duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:


Master's degree in nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner.  Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.  Additional experience may substitute for master's degree. Current CPR certification required.  Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.  Completion of the JH Bayview Medical Center credentialing process is required prior to start date.    


JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years of related clinical nursing experience preferred.
  • DEA and Maryland CDS license or willingness to obtain one.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Experience in sleep medicine or working in specialty practices such as pulmonary medicine, cardiology, neurology, psychiatry.
  • Previous experience with Epic.
  • Prior certification as a sleep educator.
  • Analytical ability necessary to evaluate health status of patient and to implement proper care plan. Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with other services
  • Ability to work well as a member of a health care team with a high degree of self-motivation.
  • General computer knowledge and ability to use computerized medical information systems


Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Advanced clinical skills in specialty area or equivalent.
  • Successfully completes all training courses required for access to Epic and other clinical software systems. 
  • General computer knowledge and capability to use computer.
  • Requires effective use of resources and cost awareness.
  • Ability to incorporate into practice theoretical concepts and advanced clinical skills with patients, families, and interdisciplinary health care team members.
  • Ability to analyze data to synthesize and summarize information and to make judgments regarding patient care.
  • Analytical ability necessary to diagnose patients and to develop and implement plans of action for long and short term management of acute and chronic health.
  • Ability to apply principles of evidence-based practice, scientific process, and service excellence in practice.


  • Ability to interact successfully with the public. Ability to perform effectively despite sudden deadlines and changing priorities. Ability to maintain personal composure in high stress situations.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills are required to service sleep center patients
  • Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with all members of the Interdisciplinary health care team to enhance collaboration and problem-solving.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in order to provide information to patients and health care personnel.
  • Ability to demonstrate and convey a favorable image of the organization and to conform to proper standards of professional dress, attitude and demeanor. 
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of interpersonal skills required to interact with patients, patients’ families/visitors and clinical staff.
  • Ability to perform with a high degree of accuracy and with meticulous attention to detail.  Demonstrate a strong ability to use initiative and judgment and to identify, analyze and solve problems.
  • Able to operate patient care equipment, computers, and general office equipment.


Physical Requirements:

  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous material, aggressive patients, pharmacological agents, with little likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed.
  • Work requires positioning, assisting, and/or providing emergency restraining of aggressive patients and patients experiencing loss of control; and transporting patients and/or equipment from one location to another with little likelihood for injury if proper body mechanics and procedures are followed.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
