CTY Instructor for Qatar Project

General Summary/Purpose:

To support CTY International at site in host country in Qatar by teaching high ability students as part of a sponsored summer academic program. The courses include The Sensory Brain, Numbers: Zero to Infinity, Writing and Reading Workshop, Writing and Imagination, Science and Engineering, Inductive and Deductive Reasoning, Writing and Imagination, Be a Scientist/Inventions/Journeys and Explorations and reaches student in 2nd- 7th grades. Project dates: 6/23/2020 - 7/17/2020.

 

NOTE: This position is not benefits eligible.

NOTE: Multiple positions are available.

 

Responsibilities:

Before Arriving at the Site:

  • Carefully read the Instructor Handbook. Review the job responsibilities of your teaching assistant. Familiarize yourself with any other program materials provided to you so that you are aware of the overall structure of the sponsor organization’s summer program and the rules and regulations for its students and staff. If any conflicts exist, please discuss with your CTY project manager.
  • Complete any required pre-summer training, including any online training courses, before reporting to the site.
  • Submit a preliminary syllabus to the CTY International project manager no later than February 1.
  • Place a supply order via CTY International’s online portal no later than February 1.
  • Prepare and submit an appropriate pre- and post-assessment for your course no later than May 15.
  • Familiarize yourself with course text(s) and any other instructional course materials. Contact the CTY International project manager if you have questions about structuring your course.
  • (Science Instructors only) Plan laboratory activities. Submit the Request for Science Equipment from Host form no later than February 1.
  • Contact your teaching assistant to collaborate about your ideas for structuring the course and to discuss her or his role.

 

Before the Students Arrive:

  • Arrive at the site on the date specified in your employment agreement in order to attend a training/orientation program prior to the arrival of students. Attend all sessions of the training/orientation program.
  • Meet with your teaching assistant to review your course syllabus and to prepare for student arrival day.
  • (Science Instructors only) Familiarize yourself with the laboratory safety and waste disposal policies of CTY and the host institution. Prepare to instruct students in laboratory safety. Discuss with your teaching assistant the specific safety instructions for your course.
  • (Science Instructors only) Review laboratory equipment and supplies on hand for your course.

 

Opening Day through Closing Day:

  • Assist with student arrival duties as assigned by site administrators. Attend opening ceremonies, and be available to speak with parents about your course.
  • Teach your class and supervise your labs according to the schedule set for your site. Assist in out of class supervision as directed by CTY International project manager.
  • Ensure that students are supervised during class or laboratory time. Instructors must be present during all science labs. Teaching assistants are not permitted to supervise labs by themselves.
  • (Science instructors only) Maintain copies of the safety data sheets for all chemicals present in your classroom and lab spaces. Make sure these sheets are readily available in each space.
  • (Science Instructors only) Supervise your teaching assistant in maintaining a master list of chemicals and other items used from the host’s stockroom and another list of any equipment broken or damaged by students or staff.
  • Take steps to educate students about, and to minimize opportunities for, cheating, plagiarism, and other forms of academic dishonesty. On the first day, have students sign the CTY Honor Code or similar document required by the sponsor. organization’s summer programs and review the CTY Understanding and Avoiding Plagiarism document with them.

 

Lead class during the academic session as indicated in this tentative schedule:

7:45 – 8:15       Students Arrive

8:30 – 12:30     Academic Session I (including a 15 minutes break)

12.30 – 1.15     Prayer and Lunch

1:15 – 2:15       Activities

2:15 – 4:30       Academic Session II (including a 15 minutes break )

4:45                  Students Depart

 

  • Schedule time as necessary for individual conferences with students. (These conferences may take place throughout the day.)
  • Attend all meetings called by the site administrators.
  • Supervise and guide your teaching assistant. The teaching assistants are provided by the sponsor organization and their roles will depend upon their background and experiences. Ensure that they have an appropriate workload.
  • Offer your teaching assistant the opportunity to participate in lesson design and develop pedagogical skills.
  • Assign class work according to guidelines discussed in the Instructor Handbook and orientation meetings.
  • Return assignments with appropriate comments to the students within one or two days. By regularly consulting with your teaching assistant and monitoring student progress, ensure that the amount and type of assignments for your students are appropriately challenging. If students take significantly more or less time to complete their work than you planned, those students’ assignments must be adjusted accordingly.
  • Keep detailed and accurate records of your students’ performance, including class participation, quiz or test work, skills mastered, insightful questions or comments, and strengths or weaknesses. Keep these records on file for one year so that they may be submitted to the CTY International project manager in the event of a question or concern.
  • Advise the sponsor organization project manager of any disciplinary, emotional, or academic problem a student may be having as soon as you are aware of the problem. Complete and submit program-specific documentation, and handle such issues according to the protocol established by the sponsor organization.
  • Assist in ensuring the health and safety of all students by following site medical protocols covered in orientation and written materials as requested by the sponsor organization project manager.
  • Administer and process pre- and post-assessments at the beginning and end of the course. Submit an electronic copy of your pre- and post-assessment and students’ scores to the CTY International project manager.
  • Cooperate with occasional observers of your class (administrators or approved visitors to the program). Every effort will be made to advise you of visitors beforehand and to keep observations from disrupting your class or laboratory sessions.
  • Abide by CTY’s research policy and any policy put forward by the sponsor organization.
  • Schedule time for students to complete program and course evaluations and any other questionnaires approved by the sponsor organization.
  • Make sure that classroom materials, library books, and equipment not purchased by the students are returned in good condition according to the procedures established by the site administrators.
  • Complete Likert-scale evaluations of your students’ academic performance alongside targeted observations according to the guidelines provided by CTY International project manager.
  • Submit to the CTY International project manager an electronic version of a final course syllabus that follows CTY guidelines and reflects what you actually covered during the course. The syllabus should be sufficiently detailed for outside audiences (such as school administrators) to understand the scope and level of the course.

 

After Students Depart:

  • Supervise your teaching assistant in inventorying, packing, and storing all classroom and laboratory supplies and materials purchased by the sponsor organization. Provide the site administrators with an inventory of all supplies and materials.
  • (Science Instructors only) Dispose of all chemicals and specimens, including waste materials, in accordance with CTY and the sponsor organization policies. Should there be any conflict between those policies, contact CTY International project manager for guidance.
  • Be available throughout the academic year for discussion of the program or of particular students. Occasionally, instances arise in which the CTY International project manager needs further details of a student’s work or of conversations (if any) with a student’s parents. Furthermore, CTY staff may wish to discuss the course you taught as they plan for future sessions. Be sure that the CTY International project manager has an address, telephone number, and email address where you can be reached during the upcoming academic year.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university is required; Master’s degree is preferred. Additional (graduate) education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula.
  • At least two years of related experience is required, such as instruction or tutoring of adolescent students.
  • JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

 

Required Special Skills and Knowledge:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Positive, proactive, and professional written and spoken communication skills using various technology is critical.
  • Must be very student-oriented.
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience working in CTY Summer Programs is preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills, Maturity, responsibility, and creativity

 
Physical Requirements for the Job:

  • Ability to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse pad and other office machinery.
  • The incumbent will be required to communicate regularly via telephone and face to face with internal and external customers and must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings.
  • Position also requires a degree of mobility common to working in an office environment; bending, kneeling or standing during events and presentations may be required.
  • Instructors are required to travel and navigate a school campus with or without ACA accommodations. This may include traversing some long distances across campus. In addition, some instructors may be required to navigate travel between off-site housing accommodations and the site campus.
  • Some lifting and moving may be required.
  • Instructor is expected to travel to site in economy class and be prepared to begin work after one day’s rest.

 

Additional Information:

  • Must provide own laptop computer for use onsite in Qatar.
  • International travel is required for this position and instructors are to be prepared to work on the first day of employment. Airfare (economy), lodging, meals and ground transportation provided by the sponsor organization.
  • All applicants must be eligible for employment in the US without sponsorship. Additionally, staff in this role will often travel to countries with additional entry requirements. As such, candidates must have a valid US passport for at least six months from the start of the program, and no reason to be denied entry into the host country.
  • The successful candidate(s) for this position will be subject to a pre-employment background check.
  • All employees participating in or serving children in University programs must participate in mandatory Child Abuse Prevention online training on the appropriate conduct around children, protecting children from abuse and neglect, and reporting of known or suspected child abuse and neglect.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
