CTY Site Teaching Assistant

General Summary/Purpose:

Teacher’s Assistants (TAs) are responsible for student supervision both inside and outside the CTY classroom. TAs also plan and lead all afternoon activities. Although certain duties are typical, tasks and responsibilities can and do change according to each day’s needs and may vary slightly. Specific tasks and responsibilities in the classroom might include assisting with instructional preparation, aiding the instructor with classroom management, taking notes about student performance, tutoring students, helping with clerical tasks such as typing and photocopying, and generally helping to ensure that the class runs smoothly. TAs are the primary staff members responsible for supervising students during lunch, breaks, and afternoon activities. As part of their supervisory duties, TAs assist with morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up.

 

Responsibilities:

  • TA’s work Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. TA’s are required to travel and navigate a school campus with or without accommodations.
  • This may include traversing some long distance across campus.
  • Some lifting and moving may be required.

 

Additional Job Responsibilities of the TA include but are not limited to:

  • Arrive at the site on the date specified in your employment agreement to attend the mandatory training/orientation program prior to the arrival of students. Attend all sessions of the training/orientation program. 
  • Work with your instructor to set up the classroom and finalize remaining course planning.
  • Familiarize yourself with the textbook(s) and materials for your course. A copy of all relevant course materials will be available for you at the site.
  • (Science TAs only) Familiarize yourself with the laboratory safety and waste disposal policies of CTY and the host institution. Discuss with your instructor the specific safety instructions for your course.    
  • (Science TAs only) Assist your instructor with a review of laboratory equipment and supplies on-hand for your course.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Currently enrolled/high school graduate/current college student; GPA of 3.0 or better.
  • Experience working with children; experience organizing recreational programs or planning events; maturity, responsibility, energy, and creativity.

 

Required Special Skills and Knowledge:

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, comfortable using Microsoft Office and web-based applications like Box.

 

Internal and External Contacts Required as Part of the Job:

  • Contact with the CTY Baltimore Emerging Scholars co-directors and BCPSS Educational Specialist before and during program; regular contact with site director, instructors, ESOL specialist, SPED specialist, and students throughout program; occasional contact with teacher’s assistants and students’ families as needed.

 

Physical Requirements for the Job:

  • Ability to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse pad and other office machinery.
  • The incumbent will be required to communicate regularly via telephone and face to face with internal and external customers and must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings.
  • Position also requires a degree of mobility common to working in an office environment; bending, kneeling or standing during events and presentations may be required.

 

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • The academic dean is supervised directly by the CTY Baltimore Emerging Scholars Co-Directors.
  • The academic dean is the direct supervisor of the instructors, ESOL specialist, and SPED specialist, and the indirect supervisor of teacher’s assistants.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
