Career Services Counselor

General summary/purpose:

The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing (JHSON), ranked as the #1 graduate nursing school by U.S. News & World Report for 2019, seeks a Career Services Counselor. This position is an excellent opportunity to build competence in all facets of career services, including student coaching and programming, resource administration, and employer engagement. JHSON enrolls approximately 800 students in Master’s and Doctoral level programs. Career Services supports all students and alumni in identifying career goals, from securing their first nursing job to pursing advanced employment and/or education. Post-graduation employment rates historically reach nearly 100%. Resources provided by Career Services are well utilized, and the Career Services Counselor position has been created to support the Director of Career Services in continually offering a high-quality experience.


Specific duties & responsibilities:

Student Coaching and Programming (40%)

  • Coach Master’s and Doctoral level students and alumni to develop professionally and attain their career goals, including externships, jobs, and further education. Appointment load is projected at 10-20 individuals per week.
  • Advise individuals on resume/CV and cover letter writing, networking and job searching techniques, and interview preparation.
  • Utilize coaching techniques and resources that meet the needs of diverse populations.
  • Maintain thorough and confidential coaching records.
  • Facilitate programs for audiences of up to 200 people, including:
    • Workshops on resume/CV and cover letter writing, networking and job searching techniques, and interview preparation
    • Panels of alumni working in particular nursing specialties
    • Employer recruitment events
    • Major annual events including mock interview days and a career fair
  • Manage logistics for events including reserving rooms, IT support, and parking; ordering supplies and catering; marketing; and tracking RSVPs.
  • Represent Career Services at events including Admissions Open Houses, New Student Orientation, and Graduation.
  • Respond to inquiries about Career Services from prospective students, current students, and alumni; make appropriate referrals.


Resource Administration (35%)

  • Maintain Career Services Management System for students, alumni, and employers, including approving registrations and job postings, announcements, and events. JHSON currently uses Symplicity but is switching to Handshake in July 2018.
  • Create and edit communications including flyers, emails, and the Career Services website.
  • Stay current on career-relevant news, resources, websites, and tools.
  • Manage student workers including creating work schedules and preparing assignments.
  • Serve on university-wide Career Services committees.

Employer Engagement (25%)

  • Maintain effective relationships with recruiters, hiring managers, and alumni at local and nationwide hospitals and nursing agencies.
  • Travel locally to maintain relationships with employers.
  • Assist employers with advertising job opportunities to the appropriate student/alumni audience.
  • Assist with collection and analysis of alumni employment data including overall placement rate, average salary, and common employers.

Minimum qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Counseling, Human Resources, or related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience.


Preferred qualifications

  • Experience in career coaching individuals, ideally from a nursing or health care population.
  • Professional experience in a career services, counseling, recruiting, or HR environment.
  • Awareness of trends in graduate level nursing education and potential career paths in nursing.
  • Knowledge of higher education and career services environment.
  • Knowledge of systems such as Symplicity, Handshake, and Salesforce.
  • Experience and confidence in presenting to small and large groups.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Role/Level/Range: ACRP/MD/4

Starting Salary Range: $50,956.00 - $70,095.00; commensurate with experience

Employee group: Full Time

Employee subgroup: Exempt

Schedule: Monday – Friday; 8:30am – 5:00pm; Occasional evening and weekend work hours per semester are required.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
