Clinical Nurse

The Department of Medicine is seeking a Clinical Nurse to coordinate clinical activities and provide nursing case management services to patients across sub-specialties within the Johns Hopkins Division of Rheumatology.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Counsels, supports, educates, and coordinates resources needed by patients with rheumatologic disease.
  • Provides primary nursing care to clinic patients. Primary nursing begins with the first encounter with the patient and continues throughout the course of care, to include: biologic injection education, co-management of Epic in basket and triaging of patient requests, independently managing prior-authorization requests, etc.
  • Independently assesses laboratory reports for abnormalities; communicates abnormalities to medical provider; implements intervention plans when clinically warranted in collaboration with provider.
  • Schedules nursing appointments for education on disease process, initiation and changing immunomodulatory/biological medications, self-care/self-management, self-injection.
  • Monitors and collaborates with organizations and payers to maintain continuity of care. This may include letters of medical necessity for accommodations, appeals for access to treatment, Family Medical Leave Act form completions, Social Security Disability forms and short/Long term disability forms.
  • Attends regularly scheduled Arthritis Center meetings and rheumatology educational conferences as requested.
  • Successfully manages fast-paced clinical environment with ability to negotiate frequent interruptions in planned work.
  • Regularly interfaces with patients and a multidisciplinary care team of providers and with clinic and research staff.
  • Provides phone triage during clinic hours.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Individual must be a registered nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland or state where practicing.
  • Completion of the JHU credentialing process to include verification of CPR certification is required prior to start date.
  • Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or a related discipline.
  • Experience in the Johns Hopkins system.
  • Experience with EPIC.

Starting Salary Range: $64,600 - $113,300 Annually ($82,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
