General Summary/ Purpose:

The Communications Associate will serve as Associate of Communications for the Center for Health Equity at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (SOM).  The Communications Associate will plan, design, implement and manage communications and marketing activities with the goal of elevating CHE’s visibility, promoting recognition as a thought leader, and sharing its research expertise on barriers and solutions to addressing health inequities.


Areas of Responsibility:

  • In consultation with Johns Hopkins University’s marketing and communications, the Communications Associate will be responsible for developing and managing the strategic communications and marketing plan, including processes and overall content, for the Center for Health Equity
  • The Communications Associate will be responsible for promoting and disseminating results of the Center's research, education and training, community engagement, and policy initiatives (e.g. success stories, events, programs, products, faculty, staff, and trainees, etc.) through written, oral and visual content across a wide variety of platforms such as CHE newsletter, website, and social media for both internal and external audiences.
  • The Communications Associate will be responsible for the writing and production of a wide variety of communications content, including marketing and promotion materials and publications in coordination with School of Medicine, Bloomberg School of Public Health, School of Nursing, and University branding and style guidelines.
  • The Communications Associate will provide consultation and recommendations related to positioning CHE favorably amongst competitors’ efforts and in the development of communication for significant initiatives, events and programs.
  • The Communications Associate will support the work of the Center’s research studies by developing recruitment and educational materials, intervention tools and other marketing and communication materials, translating science and medical jargon into materials for lay audiences and community partners.
  • The Communications Associate will review, edit, make suggestions and create consistent templates for the Center’s educational and training materials which may be used for in person or web-based training.  These include presentations on health disparities and health equity in support of training of research staff, health system quality improvement and community partner health promotional activities, the Center’s community outreach and educational programs, courses for students, workshops and panel presentations at professional meetings, and Massive Open Online Courses.
  • The Communications Associate will be responsible for developing and overseeing the maintenance of Center’s web content.
  • The Communications Associate will develop and lead a comprehensive social media strategy for CHE in close collaboration with the school’s Communications department. 
  • Maintain working relationships with communications contacts across SOM, JHU and partner organizations.
  • Be responsible for communications and engagement projects from concept to completion, including but not limited to promotional campaigns, monthly email outreach, social media, video, photography, and web content
  • Develop innovative and compelling content for multimedia materials that support the goals and objectives of the CHE
  • Identify target audience segments, design engaging messages, and determine optimal channels to reach audiences.
  • Identify stories that demonstrate the impact of the Center for Health Equity and its faculty, staff, and partners
  • Provide vision for outreach and engagement materials and create high-quality products such as presentations, reports, handouts, infographics, and other communication tools
  • Collaborate with internal departments and external vendors such as multimedia storytelling specialists, graphic designers, photographers, web designers and developers to ensure website, graphics, and marketing collateral reflect brand identity and appeal to targeted audiences.
  • Track and report key audience engagement metrics; monitor and evaluate outreach strategies (conduct evaluations, review email list membership, analyze website traffic and trends)
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Four years of relevant professional experience. Advanced degree may substitute for some experience.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate will have 6-8 years related experience. A strong understanding of marketing and communications strategies, development and maintenance of best practices in web and social media standards is required.
  • Excellent written, verbal, web-based and social media skills. 
  • Proven experience in professional communications position. Strong organizational skills.  Keen attention to detail. Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to translate complex topics and make them accessible for lay audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative in creating new content while maintaining collaborative relationships.
  • Working knowledge of web-based content management systems and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Working knowledge of photographic, audio, and video equipment to capture footage and/or oversee production of professional multimedia assets.
  • Able to travel internationally, as needed.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
