Communications Coordinator, Annual Giving

Job Title: Communications Coordinator 

The Communications Coordinator in the Office of Annual Giving (OAG) at Johns Hopkins University reports to the Director of Integrated Marketing and Operations.  

 

The Communications Coordinator is a member of the Marketing and Operations team within OAG.  The Communications Coordinator provides day-to-day support to OAG’s Marketing team.  The ideal candidate is comfortable in fast-paced and highly variable environments.  The candidate should have excellent editing and writing skills, project management skills, is detail-oriented and creative, and able to multi-task without losing sight of the goals.  The ideal candidate has a basic understanding of digital and social media, and can write and edit for multiple marketing channels.  Experience with Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a plus.  

 

The Office of Annual Giving is a growing team that currently consists of 8 colleagues who provide annual giving services to the nine schools of the university, various departments of Johns Hopkins Medicine, and several centers and institutes, totaling over 25 partners. These annual giving services include developing comprehensive and integrated solicitation strategies that are optimal for each development unit and are data-driven. Like all offices and units in Development and Alumni Relations (DAR), OAG is committed to a donor-directed philanthropy philosophy. 

 

Specific Responsibilities: 

  • Assist with the development, production, and execution of solicitation materials for over 25 internal university and medicine partners.  This includes the review of production calendars, identification of deadlines, and communication of missing/needed assets to various stakeholders. 
  • Serve as a liaison to the divisional leads within OAG to sort, assess, and project manage required direct response campaigns.
  • Support the Director of Integrated Marketing around institutional-wide solicitation campaigns like Giving Tuesday and Giving Day, including the development of social media toolkits and other digital assets. 
  • Maintain and track direct response budgets for various campaigns and projects.
  • Support the creation of printed and digital solicitation materials by way of copy editing and proofing.
  • Review solicitation data files, including the mapping of variable fields to correct funds, as well as reviewing salutations and ask strings. 
  • Compile data around response rates and ROI that will inform solicitation strategy moving forward. 
  • Work with external vendors for graphic design services, printing, promotional materials, marketing automation services, and others as applicable.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Integrated Marketing. 

 

Qualifications:

Two years college coursework and some related experience required, preferably in direct mail and digital marketing for development and alumni relations, non-profit media and/or communications.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Experience developing and deploying web, social, email, and print content. 
  • Knowledge of graphic design and desktop publishing, preferably Microsoft Publisher and Adobe Creative Suite is a plus. 
  • Experience with website development and maintenance, information architecture, content management systems, HTML.
  • Working knowledge of social media and Google analytics; knowledge of developing and implementing Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
  • Comfortable working in a complex, multi-divisional, results-oriented, fast environment.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, establish priorities, set objectives, and achieve goals.
  • Strong organizational skills and sound judgement around prioritizing many and sometimes competing obligations.  
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to listen and respond appropriately to donor and staff inquiries and concerns.
  • Excellent computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and ability to learn new software as needed. 
  • Thrive in high-energy environments that often have short deadlines and shifting priorities.
  • Have the ability to work independently as well as on a team.
  • Strong organizational and prioritizing skills with ability to stay calm under pressure when handling multiple tasks.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
