Communications Director, CHS

The Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security at the Bloomberg School of Public Health works to protect people’s health from epidemics and disasters and ensure that communities are resilient to major challenges. We examine how scientific and technological innovations can strengthen health security. We study the policies, organizations, systems, and tools to prevent and respond to outbreaks and public health crises. We advance policies and practice to address a range of challenges, including the global rise in emerging infectious diseases, a continued risk of pandemic flu, major natural disasters, our dependence on vulnerable infrastructure, and the potential for biological, chemical, or nuclear accidents or intentional threats.


We are seeking a Communications Director  who will provide vision, leadership and counsel for the Center’s communications and marketing, including overseeing the development and implementation of an integrated communications strategy and approach. The position reports to the Deputy Director and takes direction from the Center’s Director.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • The position works with Center leadership to set and guide the strategy for all communications, websites, and public relations messages to consistently articulate the Center’s message, approach, and position in the field.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for brand management, online and direct marketing, media relations, and community engagement and will work closely with a senior peer group in the Center as the communications partner on a variety of strategic initiatives.
  • Director of Communications will also work closely with the School’s central communications and marketing teams to facilitate Center adherence to BSPH and JHU Communications and Public Relations Policy.
  • Provide vision, leadership and counsel for the Center’s communications and marketing, including overseeing the development and implementation of an integrated communications strategy and approach.
  • Plan, formulate and implement communications and external engagement strategies and activities.
  • Formulate and manage a comprehensive media relations strategy and program at the local, state, national and global levels encompassing print, television and social media outlets.
  • Promote the work, prominence, and leaders of the Center through earned media, thought leadership opportunities, website content, social media, live and virtual events, and other digital platforms.
  • Support federal policy priorities, identify policy windows, and develop advocacy materials for congressional and agency staff.
  • Coordinate with the Bloomberg School's Communications and Marketing team to share key Center messages and amplify content, collaborate on communication strategies, and coordinate media interviews and other public-facing work for Center experts, liaising with JHU Central communications as needed.
  • Contribute to strategic planning for Center and its potential growth opportunities.
  • Oversee Develop strategy and implement cohesive external newsletter strategy to promote the Center’s work and position the Center as a resource lead in health security, global catastrophic biological risks, pandemic preparedness, and other relevant topic areas.
  • Lead editing and revision, production, and dissemination of communications products (includes policy reports, white papers, fact sheets, one pager, press releases/pitches, web content, donor capability statements, social posts, etc.).
  • Provide consultation and advice to program leadership on a variety of strategic and communications needs.
  • Work closely with Director and Deputy Director to lead COVID-1 9and other outbreak response efforts which focuses on analyzing data, and researching and proposing policy solutions to complex problems that have stemmed from
  • Oversee budget, implementation, and fiscal approval of communications activities.
  • Develop and manage agreements and contracts with external communications vendors.
  • Engage with key media outlets, both proactively and reactively.
  • Manage communications for events with leadership from the Director of Events.
  • Develop benchmark criteria and track and evaluate the effectiveness of the communications strategies on a regular basis.
  • Define and formulate key messages and identifying overall communication and marketing approaches.
  • Translate evidence quickly and clearly for general, academic, and policy audiences.
  • Collaborate with Central and School development staff to develop effective fundraising materials.
  • Write and edit important communication and marketing materials, including speeches, presentations, news releases, etc. on behalf of the Center leadership and Senior Faculty.
  • Create a strategy to leverage new audiences to ensure they are long-time, engaged supporters of the Center’s work.
  • Supervise team of 3 communications professionals.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Master's Degree required (MPH, MHS, MA)
  • Six years related experience required.
  • Able to take independent action and appropriate risks necessary to achieve results.
  • Adapts approaches to meet different needs and concerns of Center and partners.
  • Exemplifies the highest standards of honesty and integrity in professional and personal conduct.

JHU Equivalency Formula: Additional relevant experience and/or training may substitute for some education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.  


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of ten years of experience at large-scale international development and/or global health organization developing and implementing comprehensive communications or advocacy strategies required.
  • Advanced academic degree in communications, public health or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in all aspects of communications, including traditional and emerging media platforms required.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Outstanding management and planning skills, including the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously required.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills required.
  • Experience in media relations required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with multiple groups, including BSPH communications professionals, other staff members, administrative staff, funders, program participants, and others required.
  • A hybrid work arrangement is available.
