Communications Specialist

Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School is seeking a highly detailed and organized individual to join our Marketing and Communications team as a Communications Specialist. Reporting to the Senior Director of Strategic Communications, they will be responsible for working closely with their MarComm colleagues and collaborating with others throughout Carey Business School to maximize the school’s reputation as a high-impact graduate business research institution in America’s first research university. The incumbent will contribute to the department’s integrated and comprehensive approach to brand building and providing support for student-, alumni-, and corporate leadership engagement. This position is responsible for communicating and marketing events and partnerships to internal and external stakeholders to ensure the right audience, and to maximize Carey Business School visibility and recognition.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Internal partner support (40%)

  • Serve as communications and marketing coordinator for various internal stakeholder groups, facilitating conceptualization, planning, and delivery of needed materials in support of stakeholder initiatives, activities, and/or events.
  • Regularly meet with internal stakeholder groups to stay abreast of initiatives and ongoing projects requiring or benefitting from support and/or publicity from the Marketing and Communications team.
  • Collaborate with the Creative Services team to provide deliverables to stakeholders in a timely manner, managing process and expectations.
  • Regularly share stakeholder items of interest with the Marketing and Communications team to assist in developing content ideas and strategic execution.
  • Serve as point person in sourcing information and assets from stakeholders, sharing developed content with stakeholders, receiving feedback, and facilitating editorial procedures for content relating to stakeholders.


External speaker event support (30%)

  • Working with the Senior Director of Strategic Communications, the Manager for Center and Initiative Relations, the Office of the Dean, and the Event Planning and Space Management team, conduct research, planning, marketing, delivery, and post-event analysis and summary of high-profile speaker series.
  • Build and navigate positive relationships with high-profile entrepreneurs, executives, and other leaders both inside and outside of Carey Business School in pursuit of Carey’s reputational goals for speaker engagements.
  • Lead outreach and scheduling coordination with speakers and their teams to align on themes, messaging, marketing materials, and event preparation and execution, including virtual events.
  • In consultation with Carey Marketing and Communications teammates and external speaker teams, develop, revise, and finalize suggested topics of discussion for internal departmental and external speaker review.
  • Develop talking points and/or questions for internal hosts/panelists and external speakers, in alignment with Carey’s goals for engagements.
  • Serve as Carey MarComm point person for all logistical coordination in speaker events, both in Baltimore and in Washington, D.C.
  • Determine collateral needs for speaker event promotion and coordinate with Creative Services team to ensure delivery with brand-loyal copy and design.
  • Source and manage metrics and identify trends regarding event attendance and related distribution, offering analysis and suggestions for enhanced engagement.
  • Regularly report on event engagement and associated trends in alignment with Carey’s brand and programmatic interests.


Brand & related reputation management support (20%)

  • Working with the Senior Director for Strategic Communications, facilitate support for national and global sponsorship initiatives to enhance brand awareness, recognition, and favorability.
  • Collaborate with Creative Services team to ensure timely delivery of brand-loyal sponsorship-related collateral and other deliverables.
  • Represent the Marketing and Communications team in meetings and communications in the event that the Senior Director is unavailable.

Special Skills Knowledge & Abilities

  • Knowledge of social and mobile media, including Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
  • Understanding of CRM software, CMS platforms (Drupal), Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, Google Analytics, Mailchimp or other email platforms, other tracking tools, social media and digital marketing platforms.
  • Ability to translate vision into actions through communications, projects and relationships.
  • Hands-on experience with event coordination, digital marketing, creation of marketing materials, and digital analytics tools.
  • Excellent organization and planning skills with the ability to navigate multiple projects and priorities with strong problem-solving ability.
  • Exceptional ability to build relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, to be influential and to perform in a broad range of environments.
  • Effective communicator with excellent written and verbal communication experience, experience editing/providing feedback on the work of others.
  • Demonstrated versatility in writing styles, including copy for marketing collateral, social media posts, and feature stories for web.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and collaboration skills, with a high degree of professionalism and the ability to exercise good judgment, diplomacy, and discretion, with diverse populations and situations.
  • Analytical skills—able to leverage data to inform both marketing and communications decisions.
  • Project management—demonstrated initiative, problem solving, attention to detail and team management skills.
  • Strong collaboration and team skills.




Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • Two years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field and four years of related experience strongly preferred.
  • Five+ years of related experience in advanced marketing, communications and/or editorial experience preferred.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
