General summary/purpose: 

The Communications Specialist will lead a process for specifying a communication plan and execute this plan in partnership with the leadership, staff and partners of the Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative (CAHMI). The CAHMI is a national initiative based out of the Department of Population, Family and Reproduction Health of the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Our mission is to advance improvements in the health and wellbeing of children and families through research, measurement, and partnership with families, health care professionals, and policy leaders.


The Communications Specialist will have the skills and knowledge to specify consistent approaches to communicating about the CAHMI overall as well as within the context of its key initiatives—the National Data Resource Center for Adolescent Health, the Maternal and Child Health Measurement Research Network, the Family Driven Quality Measurement and Improvement project and efforts to promote implementation of its National Child Well Being and Adverse Childhood Experiences agenda.  The Communications Specialist must have the capacity to frame communications to both broad and specific audiences of stakeholders interested and involved in maternal and child health (MCH) programs, policies, and data. The Communications Specialist will coordinate activities to engage key audiences and ensure clear, compelling and standardized methods to writing, editing and producing materials related to CAHMI project summaries and resources, education, outreach and engagement efforts.  The ability to build a strategic contacts list to support auto-email strategies using Constant Contact and to populate contact lists from web-based registrations is essential.  The Communications Specialists will also oversee the process to develop, write and edit outreach, newsletter, presentations and program materials, and serve as a general communications resource for CAHMI staff.   

 

The ideal candidate for this position will have an interest in population health, maternal and child health, and demonstrated skills in improving outreach and communications in these topical areas. The Communications Specialist will be under the supervision of a Research Program Manager & the Director of the CAHMI. The ideal candidate is highly organized, an excellent writer and eager to take on new challenges. Some familiarity and interest in public health and health care systems and maternal and child health is essential.

 

 

Specific duties & responsibilities

The Specialist will:

  • Assist with developing short and longer-term communication strategies
  • Assist with developing target audience engagement plans, including outreach strategies, for the CAHMI and its projects;
  • Implement all activities according to specified outcomes, quality standards, time frames and budget constraints, and with minimal supervision on defining, planning for and meeting work goals and timelines as agreed upon.
  • Actively participate in team meetings and day-to-day activities and assignments;
  • Identify stories that demonstrate the impact of the CAHMI and its projects on the MCH field and faculty, staff, and partners
  • Assist with the writing, editing and production of marketing, outreach and engagement materials, including web and social media content development and contributions to e-newsletters, reports, PowerPoint presentations, and other communications.
  • Be responsible for communications projects from concept to completion, including but not limited to promotional campaigns, weekly email outreach, social media campaigns, video, photography, and web content:
    • Identify target audience segments, design engaging messages and determine optimal channels to reach audiences.
    • Draft budget recommendations for communications.
  • Assist with drafting and implementing brand standards to deliver a consistent voice and appearance for all CAHMI and project-related communications;
  • Provide vision for outreach and engagement materials and create high-quality products such as presentations, reports, handouts, infographics, and other communication tools;
  • Write and update content for CAHMI’s websites; collaborate with web designers and developers to ensure website reflects brand identity;
  • Monitor and evaluate outreach strategies (conduct evaluations, review email list membership and member activity, analyze website traffic and trends with Google Analytics);
  • Maintain working relationships with communications contacts across JHU and partner organizations;
  • Coordinate and grow CAHMI’s educational offerings;
  • Assist with production of video tutorials;
  • Track and report key community engagement metrics;
  • Seek continuous growth and improvement opportunities; and
  • Other duties as assigned, to support CAHMI at national conferences and meetings. 

 

 

 

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree in related field.
  • 2 years related experience.
  • Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in public health or health-care related work is a plus but not required.

 

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

 

  • Demonstrated excellent written and interpersonal communication skills, including tact and sensitivity. Samples will be requested.
  • Demonstrated experience with social media platforms in a professional setting and familiar with web content management. Samples will be requested.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Successful candidates will be high energy, proactive, flexible, and outgoing, with the proven capacity to work quickly and accurately, both independently and with a small team of dedicated professionals. 
  • Ability to problem solve, to work comfortably in a fast-paced environment, and to effectively prioritize managing multiple projects while setting and meeting demanding deadlines.
  • Familiarity with Sitefinity/Website content management, Adobe, Photoshop, Hootsuite or other social media platform manager, Microsoft Office Suite (including advanced PowerPoint and Visio skills), Social Media platforms, and/or other graphic design software programs.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
