Communications Specialist

General Summary:

The Department of Health Policy and Management (HPM) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is seeking a Communications Specialist to support communication efforts of the department.

HPM faculty and staff are involved in cutting-edge research in a wide variety of issue areas, including but not limited to gun violence, mental health, health disparities, population health IT, aging, the opioid epidemic and other issues making headlines today. The person who fills this position will help plan, design, implement and manage various communications and public affairs activities with the goal of elevating visibility and building positive awareness of HPM research, practice and educational activities on a variety of mediums, such as digital, print, reports, videos and social media.

 

The Communications Specialist will be responsible for helping promote the department's research, practice and educational initiatives through written and oral communications and visual content across a wide variety of platforms including local, regional, and national print and electronic media outlets, digital platforms and social media. The Communications Specialist will work closely with the HPM faculty, HPM Centers and HPM leadership to help disseminate important findings from research studies conducted within the Department. This will involve proactively working with faculty, students and staff on developing, writing and designing content for the web including text, audio and video.

The Communications Specialist will also develop and lead a comprehensive social media strategy for the Department and Centers in close collaboration with the social media team within the School and the Department’s Communications Associate.

 

 

Specific Duties/ Responsibilities

  • Develop innovative and compelling content for multimedia materials (video, photography, tweets, text, blogs) that support the goals and objectives of the department
  • Write, design, produce reports, press releases, infographics, announcements, campaigns, brochures and other documents for the department and research centers
  • Help maintain departmental website by keeping information up-to-date and accurate
  • Support the writing and development of talking points, newsletters, presentations and other marketing materials for the department and research centers
  • Engage multiple audiences to increase visibility, interactivity and brand awareness.
  • Use social media to drive users to the department’s website, promote faculty, research, academic programs, events and other content
  • Develop, update and maintain a public relations/social media/marketing calendar
  • Report monthly social media analytics and recommendations on how to improve the reach and effectiveness of HPM communications on those channels
  • Serve as a point-of-contact to non-JHU community members, including the media
  • Maintain email lists and databases of important audiences
  • Provide communications support and technical assistance for faculty
  • Ensure all communication projects and marketing efforts comply with the University Branding Guidelines of JHU Use of Name Guidelines
  • Other duties assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field.
  • Two (2) years related experience.
  • Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.18 graduate degree credits = 1 year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college coursework may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

  • Strong interest in strategic communications
  • Interest in public health and public health policy
  • Excellent technical communications skills, both written and verbal, and ability to communicate to a range of audiences
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to understand and synthesize and distill large amounts of information, and generate key messages
  • Ability to appropriately communicate with external partners
  • Experience with social media and website content generation and management.
  • Experience leading/managing projects and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work well under pressure with demanding and/or shifting deadlines
  • Excellent work attitude and habits including strong interpersonal skills, reliability, flexibility, self-motivated and the ability to think and work independently and as a team
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively and critically in problem-solving and project implementation
  • Stay abreast of relevant global health news, developments and events and keep HPM faculty and staff up to date and proactively engaged as needed
  • Proactively liaise and correspond with project team, contractors and other related personnel & partners
  • Research opportunities for new social marketing platforms and select adapt current process to fit department needs. 

 

Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience using web content management systems
  • Experience using, translating and applying Google Analytics
  • Experience with design software/programs (i.e. Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, iMovie)

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
