Communications Specialist

General Summary/Purpose

IVAC seeks a Communications Specialist to create excellent content and manage communications projects to build the value of vaccines. Reporting to IVAC’s Communications Lead, the specialist will generate and execute communication plans and develop strategic messages with rigorous technical oversight, focusing especially on two IVAC projects to prevent two major childhood diseases, rotavirus and pneumococcal disease.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • For PSERENADE, manage the development of a data visualization tool to show how PCV vaccines are changing the burden of pneumococcal disease over time
  • For RAVIN, coordinate with program partners (e.g., CDC, JSI, WHO, Gavi, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) to support communication efforts aimed at accelerating access to rotavirus vaccine, such as developing briefs, reports, and publications summarizing implementation lessons learned for immunization stakeholders
  • Formulate communications strategy to disseminate research and practice results to key audiences such as policy makers, funders, and advocates who can take action by strengthening immunization and health systems to prevent disease and save lives
  • Develop and oversee the review of other technical materials such as fact sheets, brochures, and slide decks
  • Build and manage public websites communicating about the value of vaccine
  • Analyze engagement metrics on digital platforms and tools, such as new user growth and shares, to evaluate impact of communication activities
  • Develop tweets/posts announcing recent IVAC publications, programmatic achievements, and outcomes, and sharing key data
  • Develop excellent content across all platforms ensuring adequate technical reviews but requiring little top-editing for grammar and tone
     

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related field.

Two (2) years related experience.

 

Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the * JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

 

 

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related field such as journalism or writing.

  • Knowledge and interest in global health, especially vaccines, diarrhea, pneumonia and/or other major global infectious childhood diseases.
  • Ability to process and translate complex concepts for a variety of audiences into compelling key messages.
  • Demonstrated ability to write in a clear and organized fashion with little top-editing.
  • Previous experience with scientific or health-related social media.
  • Experience with data visualization, creating graphics, or designing simple layouts (for slides and documents, etc.).
  • Experience with social media and communications platforms (Twitter, Facebook).
  • Three (3) years of related experience in science journalism and web design/maintenance.

 

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, ability to manage multiple projects successfully, and occasionally under tight deadlines.
  • Intermediate to advanced PowerPoint skills.
  • Adobe design suite experience (e.g., InDesign, Adobe, Photoshop) preferred.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
