Communications Specialist


General summary/purpose:

This position coordinates the development of all communication, marketing and business development initiatives within the Department of Radiology and Johns Hopkins Medical Imaging. This position reports to the Director of Communications & Strategic Initiatives, and is a critical member of executing the vision of the Chair of Radiology and growing the business of outpatient radiology services.

This position will ensure all internal and external communication initiatives have a consistent voice and tone, and represents the radiology department to our patients, referring providers, faculty and staff. The successful candidate will have excellent writing skills, ability to collaborate across a wide variety of teams and functions, and thrive in a growing and fast-paced environment.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Write, develop and edit content for communication needs for Department of Radiology, which may include print collateral, referring provider quarterly e-newsletter, marketing brochures, internal faculty newsletter, executive messaging, PowerPoint presentations, or patient education materials.
  • Write and edit content for alumni and donor newsletter, which may include articles on research projects, residency program developments or donor feature profiles. Coordinate visual assets and work closely with central communications department on the overall production, design and printing of publication.
  • Serve as main liaison with Marketing & Communications department on development of all print collateral, advertising, website content, videos, photos and other resources. Review and approve content, and facilitate additional approvals as necessary.
  • Create messaging, digital resources and marketing collateral to increase the patient experience and physician referrals that may include information on new imaging technology, locations or procedures, and promote the department and imaging services overall.
  • Consult on a regular basis with physician liaison sales team to stay informed of feedback from key referring provider offices and assess needs to provide additional resources or marketing campaigns to reach target audience. 
  • Manage social media presence for Johns Hopkins Medical Imaging, creating content that will engage patients, providers and other customers.
  • Ensure consistent messaging for advertising and marketing campaigns across all Radiology entities, including Johns Hopkins Medical Imaging and hospitals within Johns Hopkins Medicine.
  • This position collaborates closely with colleagues across the department of radiology as well as Marketing & Communications department liaisons, including marketing manager, marketing administrator, web content specialist and web designer.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field and a minimum of 2 years of related experience. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an exceptional ability to communicate through written materials and the ability to translate technical concepts into broadly accessible content.
  • Knowledge of marketing, print communications, web, social media, and other digital platforms.
  • Ability to build relationships across the organization, and experience effectively working with diverse constituencies.
  • Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Starting Salary Range:   $42,256-$58,041

Employee Group: Full-Time

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
