Community Outreach Specialist

General summary/purpose:

The Community Outreach Specialist will work as part of a collaborative multidisciplinary team on project to address prevention and treatment of depression for Latino immigrants in Baltimore. This position will be instrumental in supporting participant recruitment, qualitative data collection, community engagement, data interpretation and dissemination, and insight into local context.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Recruiting participants for enrollment into the project
  • Conduct community outreach and engagement and engage with partner organizations and organizations that regularly interact with people who use drugs about the project.
  • Identify field sites for conducting interviews and observations, and explore sites and settings for potential future programs and services
  • Completion of observation notes and memos using a structured form.
  • Document all work activities in accordance with project guidelines.
  • Support research interviewer tasks as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED, and a minimum of two years related experience.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Five years related experience preferred.
  • Previous experience working with immigrant communities, group facilitation, and/or community stakeholders including front line workers, service providers, program planners, and decision makers desired.
  • Fluency in spoken and written Spanish is strongly preferred

  • Ability to interact sensitively, effectively, and professionally with individuals from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and educational background

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
