Contracts Associate

We are seeking a Contracts Associate who will review, negotiate and draft research contracts for the School of Medicine as part of the Office of Research Administration.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


  • Negotiates/drafts sponsored research agreements, as well as materials transfer agreements, and data use agreements for the assigned departments.
  • Works independently and reviews contracts for completeness and compliance and drafts original contracts as needed.
  • Participate in the training/guidance of School of Medicine staff and faculty in research compliance.
  • Assists senior staff in negotiations, drafting, and processing of complex sponsored research agreements and research related agreements.
  • Review final agreements against negotiated changes.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree required, with J.D. preferred.
  • Three years of experience with drafting and negotiation of research-related documents in a sponsored research environment or similar activities at a university, state/federal agency, or similar environment is required.
  • Formal training and experience in sponsored research administration, intellectual property management and related topics required.
  • Demonstrated ability to perceive administrative and regulatory issues and conceptualize how to find solutions and research consensus and to complete complex tasks.
  • Experience and references should demonstrate past performance effectiveness.
  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills and competent judgment.
  • Must be very organized, bright, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be self-confident, articulate and oriented to assisting faculty to succeed.
  • Additional experience may be considered in lieu of education, and additional education may substitute for experience (e.g., JD).


Preferred Qualifications
  • Additional education preferred especially related to clinical trials, sponsored research, contracting, science and intellectual property.
  • Successful candidates must be very organized, able to spot legal issues, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience and references should demonstrate past performance effectiveness.
  • Must be self-confident, articulate and oriented to assisting the faculty to succeed.

Starting Salary Range: $73,300 - $128,300 Annually ($95,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
